Brady's Appeal to Be Heard June 23
Friday, May 29
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Brady's appeal hearing will take place June 23.
Once the NFL levied its punishment against the four-time Super Bowl champion, his filing of an appeal was only a matter of time. Turner Sports' Rachel Nichols provided the statement from the NFL Players Association regarding its desire to challenge the suspension:
The collective bargaining agreement stipulates that a date be set for a player's appeal hearing within 10 days of the appeal's filing. Obviously, that didn't happen in this case, but it was a mutual decision between Brady and the league, according to ESPN.com.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's role as both lawmaker and arbiter of punishments adds another wrinkle to the situation. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the players union wanted Goodell to abstain from the appeal process, a motion that he denied:
Sporting News' Jesse Spector commented on the seeming conflict of interest:
While it's possible that Goodell could reduce Brady's suspension, the Patriots likely plan on having Jimmy Garoppolo start under center for the first four games of the 2015 regular season.
With Brady out, the 23-year-old quarterback, whom New England selected in the second round of the 2014 draft, will have a great opportunity to prove his worth and potentially start climbing out of the All-Pro's shadow.
