Dante Fowler Jr. to the Jacksonville Jaguars: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Evan ReierApr 30, 2015

With the third overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. He excelled as a pass-rusher at the University of Florida for three years, and he'll look to have continued success with the Jaguars.

First, the undeniable fact about Fowler is that he is an incredible athlete. At 6'3" and 261 pounds, he is near-perfect in size and has the natural athleticism to boot.

The most impressive aspects of his overall natural athleticism are his arms. With arms that measure just less than 34 inches, Fowler is adept at using them to get by blockers and to wrap up the quarterback consistently.

Fowler was one of Florida's most important players and a leader. He made an impact for the Gators in 2012 when he got his first taste of playing time and continued to be vital to the defense until he left in 2014.

Fowler totaled 14.5 total sacks in his three-year career in Gainesville and 8.5 sacks in his last season. He seemed to improve each season for the Gators, and his growth and potential ceiling are why the Jaguars drafted him.

He has been impressive throughout his career, but what's more impressive is how much better he can still get. He's not completely sound technically, and he's still improving his body for peak condition.

Besides Fowler's incredible athleticism, he seems to have sharp instincts and recognition. He's quick off the snap and decisive in his movements when rushing the quarterback. Of all of the edge-rushers available, he has the best combo of athleticism and football intelligence.

As mentioned, Fowler isn't perfect technically, and he's not fantastic in anything other than pass rushing. He made big plays for the Gators with his quickness and growing strength, but he'll need to work to be consistent in the NFL.

Fowler will play the Leo position for the Jaguars, a position that focuses mostly on pass rushing, so it's tailor-made for his ability. However, he may not pick up the job his first day in Duval.

Chris Clemons was an impressive Leo for the Jaguars last season, and while he is 33 years old, he won't go quietly to the bench. Fowler is going to have to work and perform on a weekly basis to secure the starting spot.

This is the best thing the Jaguars can offer him. Keeping Fowler working and having him stay alert will help him on and off the field to make sure he's in top condition. One of the worst things a team can do is put a player in a starting position with no competition.

The Jaguars went with the best fit for their defense, and I can't fault them. Fowler has great potential and can play right now as well. If he can work with Clemons and the rest of the defense, he could make big strides sooner rather than later.

Fowler's upside and overall transition to the NFL have yet to be seen, but I'm pleased with this selection and give the selection an A-minus. He comes with risks, but Fowler has Pro Bowl potential and could become the face of the Jaguars defense.

What do you think? Was Fowler the right pick? Or did the Jaguars miss out? Answer in the poll!
