La'el Collins' Agent's Attempt to Pull OT from 2015 NFL Draft Denied
With an off-field situation threatening to send former LSU offensive lineman La'el Collins plummeting down draft boards, the prospect's agent reportedly sought clearance from the league to bypass the 2015 NFL draft.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the request was denied:
The NFL later confirmed that report, via Albert Breer of NFL.com.
According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the agent's goal was to enter Collins in the supplemental draft once his character concerns were cleared up:
According to Schefter, police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, sought to question Collins on Tuesday in relation to the murder of a pregnant woman who was reportedly Collins' ex-girlfriend.
Schefter passed along comments from Collins' attorney, Jim Boren.
"We took the investigation seriously," Boren said Tuesday. "We've tried to rule him out as a suspect. We're going to provide that information to the police, and ultimately (Collins) will sit down and talk to them. But the timing is poor."
Although Collins isn't currently a suspect in the investigation, teams have been shying away from him until more information comes out, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports:
According to Ryan Feder of Pro Football Focus, the NFL collective bargaining agreement's language makes such an exception unlikely:
Collins is capable of playing both tackle and guard and has been regarded as a late-first-round prospect by many pundits leading up to the draft.
There is no telling how far he could fall if teams are concerned about any potential link to the murder, so his agent's reported attempt to appeal to the NFL was understandable.
Provided the league has rejected the proposal, though, Collins will undoubtedly make for one of the draft's most intriguing storylines.
