Scott PolacekMar 4, 2015

Eagles Confirm Maxwell Signing

Tuesday, March 10

The Eagles' Twitter account confirmed today that the team has signed Maxwell:

Maxwell Reportedly Will Sign With Eagles

Sunday, March 8

Jayson Braddock of SportsTalk 790 in Houston reported the "Byron Maxwell deal is done. Guarantee came in higher after more discussion. Byron Maxwell will become an Eagle Tuesday w/ $25 mil guaranteed."

Earlier on Sunday, Yahoo Sports' Rand Getlin noted that "the Eagles are currently willing to pay CB Byron Maxwell north of $10M per year, per a source. Top of the market."

According to Braddock, "Deal also changed from 6 year $63 mil. It's now reportedly set to be a 5 year deal around $53 to 54 million."

Ty Schalter of Bleacher Report weighed in on the reported terms of the agreement:

Maxwell spoke about potentially joining the Eagles when asked during an appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter on March 5, via Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation.

"Definitely. They run the scheme that I’m talking about. Cover 3, man press," Maxwell said. "And they’re committed to winning, so definitely Philadelphia. If they was to come at me, I would definitely have to consider them."

On March 4, Around the NFL and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported the Eagles had interest in Maxwell.

Few teams in the league need help in the secondary more than the Eagles, who finished 31st against the pass in 2014. Teams repeatedly burned Philadelphia’s lackluster corners through the air, which caused the Eagles to miss the playoffs despite having a productive offense.

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal and Chris Wesseling had Maxwell as the No. 9 overall player and top cornerback on their list of the 101 top free agents available this offseason, so he would certainly help Philadelphia rebuild its secondary.
