49ers Cut Johnson
Thursday, March 12
The 49ers announced they have released Johnson. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reported Johnson was cut by the team on March 11.
Johnson will have multiple suitors, according to a report from Dianna Marie Russini of NBC4 in Washington, D.C., on March 9.
On Feb. 28, Russini of NBC4 reported that the release saves the 49ers more than $5 million in salary:
At the time, Johnson even posted the following to Instagram, suggesting his time with the 49ers was coming to a close:
Johnson caught just 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns in his only season with San Francisco. That type of production along with a crowded wideout group left little reason for the 49ers to keep him, given the high price tag.
The Kentucky product spent the first six years of his career with the Buffalo Bills. A seventh-round pick, he developed into one of the league's most efficient route runners. He doesn't, however, feature high-end speed to beat defenses over the top consistently.
Johnson can still be an asset for a team in need of help at wide receiver. The most important thing will be finding a better situation in terms of playing time, even if that means accepting a slightly more team-friendly deal to make it happen.
At 28, there are still productive years ahead of Johnson if he lands in the right spot.
