Who Is the Draft's Top Quarterback?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers own the draft's first pick, and since they're very much a quarterback-needy team, the prospect deemed the draft's top quarterback will undoubtedly go No. 1 overall. However, the debate over whether that player is Oregon's Marcus Mariota or Florida State's Jameis Winston rages on.
Both signal-callers boast impressive size, mobility and big arms, but each has a different downside. Mariota hasn't seen experience in a pro-style offense (sans the Philadelphia Eagles), and he may need more time to develop. On the other hand, Winston ran a pro-friendly offense at Florida State, but his off-field issues are concerning to NFL executives.
According to a recent report from Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith appears to be favoring Winston heading into the combine. Still, that could change in the blink of an eye.
Winston and Mariota have been working out with respective positional coaches during the early portions of the offseason; however, it's still undetermined whether they will throw at the combine. If they don't throw, it's unlikely Mariota's draft stock will change, but Winston will still be heavily scrutinized during his time in front of the media. His answers may affect how NFL teams feel about him going forward.
Keeping Tabs on Injuries
Several potential first-round prospects enter the combine after suffering late-season injuries. Their current state of rehabilitation will dictate whether or not they will fully participate in workouts. Three notable players in this particular situation to keep an eye on are Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Texas A&M offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and Georgia running back Todd Gurley.
Ekpre-Olomu was lost late in the season after suffering a serious knee injury during practice. Due to the severity of his injury, it's unlikely the cornerback will participate in any drills at the combine. While he has a smaller size at 5'9", 195 pounds, his well-rounded skill set will intrigue NFL teams to draft him as a slot corner.
Ogbuehi was one of the top-ranked offensive tackle prospects following the 2014 season. At 6'5" and 300 pounds with a big, sturdy frame, thick base and surprising agility, the former Aggie seemed destined to go in the first round. Unfortunately, a torn ACL may have derailed his first-round bid. Ogbuehi won't participate in positional drills at the combine, but he will compete in the bench press.
Gurley was considered the draft's top running back by several analysts during the 2014 season; however, a torn ACL late in the year saw him slide down big boards. The ball-carrier isn't expected to participate in individual drills, and that may affect his draft stock enough to slide out of the first round.
Watching for Red Flags
Some of the combine's participants excel on the football field but lose much of their luster due to off-field transgressions or maturity issues. These concerns could cause even the most talented prospects to severely slide down draft boards due to the unwillingness of NFL teams to gamble on the notion they will be able to turn things around.
The most known player with some off-field concerns is Winston. The former Seminole has a laundry list of incidents stemming back to 2012. Just last season, he was suspended for one game after yelling an obscene comment in the school's student union. He'll need to prove he can mature quickly if he intends to be the first quarterback selected in this year's draft.
Dorial Green-Beckham is an intriguing wide receiver prospect; however, he comes with concerns as well. He's an absolute monster at 6'6" and has freakish athleticism, but he was dismissed from Missouri's football team after several incidents while enrolled at the school. Green-Beckham transferred to Oklahoma but was ineligible to play during the 2014 season.
Washington cornerback Marcus Peters is another name to watch here. A very talented player, he features a great blend of physicality and athleticism that should make him a force on the outside in the NFL. Although, he comes with some red flags after several altercations with Washington coaches led to his dismissal from the team.
Pay close attention when these players speak to the media. Their attitude and answers will determine how they're viewed by the professional ranks going forward.
