Suh "Locked Into Dolphins," Deal Reportedly Worth Around $114 Million

Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that Suh's deal with the Dolphins is around $114 million, with $60 million guaranteed.

Albert Breer of NFL.com reported on how the market shaped around Suh:

Josina Anderson of ESPN reported that some within the Lions were hearing of a potential agreement with the Dolphins through Mortensen's report. She added that the team is still hopeful it can re-sign him, per a team source:

[The Miami Dolphins & Ndamukong Suh] can't finalize until Tuesday. We will hope he comes to his senses." The source added, "key is playing for coach [Jim] Caldwell and Teryl [Austin]. Plus good players around him. Can't get that there..."

Earlier, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported that Suh's deal with the Dolphins is expected to set a new high for guaranteed money for a defensive player.

On March 7, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported that a "high-placed source told me with confidence Suh is going to Dolphins. 2nd source said Lions only other team chasing." At the time, Robinson also reported what it would take for Detroit to possibly remove Miami from the running. "For him to listen to the Lions, $17-$18 mil per season and $52 million guaranteed would merit a conversation."

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported on March 5 that the Dolphins would make a major effort to land Suh and that the deal could fall in the $17 million-per-year range with over $60 million guaranteed.

Lions, Suh's Agent Talk at Combine

The Detroit Lions met with Suh's agent at the scouting combine as the franchise looks to keep its defensive star, according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com, who spoke to general manager Martin Mayhew:

"Tom had some extensive dialogue with him," general manager Martin Mayhew said over breakfast at the combine. "I saw him when he first showed up at the hotel. Had a brief conversation downstairs. But we've been in contact with him since we've been down there."

Meinke also touched on Suh's demands and spoke with Mayhew about the team's willingness to meet them:

Suh is believed to be seeking a contract that would make him the highest paid defensive player in the game. That means matching the $100 million deal that JJ Watt signed with Houston last fall.

Are the Lions willing to go that high?

"That's a good question. That's an excellent question. And as I've said, we don't negotiate through newspapers," Mayhew said. "I think that's part of the negotiations, and I think I'll keep that between us.

"We're not going to get in the paper and start saying what we offered, and they offered. ... That doesn't make a lot of sense from my standpoint. I don't know how that benefits us, or how that benefits the process. So we'll stay out of that."
