Percy Harvin, Rex Ryan Comment on Trade to Jets from Seahawks
One of the biggest dominoes to fall ahead of the 2014 NFL trade deadline was Percy Harvin's trade from the Seattle Seahawks to the New York Jets. Ahead of the first game with his new team, Harvin and head coach Rex Ryan spoke Monday about the trade.
Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday provided comments from the receiver:
He might fit well into the system, but how does he get along with the coaching staff and quarterback so far? Harvin referenced both:
"Harvin said he loves, loves Rex
— Kimberley A. Martin (@KMart_LI) October 20, 2014"
Harvin was riddled with injuries during 2013 with Seattle, but he came up big in the Super Bowl with a kickoff return for a touchdown. Prior to the trade, Harvin had just 22 receptions for 133 yards and no touchdowns through five games.
Ryan already addressed one way Harvin will be utilized, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News and Martin:
Controversy has swirled around Harvin since the trade about issues like not wanting to enter games and his troubled past. But Harvin addressed all of those points along with his frustration in the Seattle offense:
Ryan clearly isn't concerned with Harvin's past, as Mehta passed along:
Jets general manager John Idzik gave his thoughts on the deal as well, according to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini:
""This could be a potential coup for the New York Jets," general manager John Idzik said, commenting for the first time on last Friday's blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks.
[...]
Idzik said the Jets did "a ton of background work" on Harvin, who has a history of altercations with teammates and coaches. Idzik, a former Seahawks executive, said his familiarity with his former team was an "advantage" as they performed due diligence.
"It's about looking forward, understanding what may have happened in the past -- I wasn't there, he was," Idzik said. "That's really in the rear-view mirror. It's about learning from your experiences, like everybody else, and we're looking forward."
"
Idzik continued to talk about Harvin and what he brings to the Jets' attack, according to Cimini:
"Pure and simple, bringing a player like Percy in is to help our offense. He's an explosive player, he's a dynamic player. I think he can help our offense.
I think we have some weapons, I really do. We're developing those weapons. We're developing as an offense. We're developing around Geno [Smith]. Percy will help in that regard.
"
Harvin, who is still just 26 years old, has 303 receptions for 3,452 yards and 20 touchdowns in his career. The former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings also boasts five scores on kick returns.
It is difficult to predict how well Harvin will truly fit into the Jets offense moving forward. Thanks to his playmaking ability as both a receiver and kick returner, he can provide explosive plays for a team that desperately needs them.
It's clear that Harvin "loves" being in New York and should benefit Ryan's team. With the team already 1-6 and looking to turn things around, Harvin should get his opportunity to shine against the Buffalo Bills in Week 8.
