The San Francisco 49ers controlled the second half of their Monday night game against the St. Louis Rams, but it wasn’t all good news. The team provided an update regarding the health of offensive lineman Mike Iupati:

Injuries are never a welcome development, but this is especially unfortunate for the 49ers because of how reliant they are on the rushing attack. Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde and Colin Kaepernick are all threats on the ground, but it is difficult to establish a consistent running game without a stout offensive line.

Iupati actually sprained his MCL last season and missed some time, but he played in all 16 contests in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

It is no secret that concussions are certainly tricky in today’s NFL, so it remains to be seen when Iupati will be ready to return. He will have to pass the concussion protocol before returning to the field, but San Francisco will ideally have him back on the offensive line before the season’s stretch run.
