Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis' Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 5

Steven CookOct 5, 2014

Right when it looked like the Kansas City Chiefs were happy implementing a two-back system to incorporate both Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis, the star rusher took over the duties almost single-handedly in Week 5.

The Chiefs disappointed on Sunday after giving up a fourth-quarter lead to lose at San Francisco, but it wasn't without a strong outing from Charles. He re-emerged as the feature back after an ankle injury limited his production as of late, taking 15 carries for 80 yards and recovering his only fumble of the contest.

But after huge production the past three weeks, Davis came back down to earth. He only had two carries for six yards in the 22-17 defeat.

After notching at least 16 carries in each of the Chiefs' past three games, Davis was once again relegated to the bench role. His 16 carries for 107 yards against New England last week made fantasy owners wonder if the second-year back would remain relevant.

Per Mike Clay of Pro Football Focus, the imbalanced production Sunday told fantasy owners everything they needed to know:

But Charles has seemingly returned to full health over the last few weeks. It was apparent on Sunday that as long as the speedy back is producing at a high rate, he'll be the go-to guy in the backfield during tight games.

The 27-year-old Charles was a source of frustration for fantasy owners early in 2014, only notching 23 rushing yards in Kansas City's first three games—one of which he missed. But with at least 15 carries the past two weeks, 172 rushing yards and three total scores in that span, he's quickly returning to stardom.

Charles is an obvious RB1 whenever he's active in a game, and recent performances show that no matter how strong Davis performs behind him, the University of Texas standout will continue as the primary ball-handler. That will only hurt Davis' production, as he's proven to be worthy of starting when he gets the workload but far from effective when Charles is in the fold.

Three of Kansas City's next four opponents rank 22nd or worse in run defense, which means Charles' dominance should only increase. Should the Chiefs blow one of those games open, Davis should see plenty of the ball—but that's not really a situation you want to gamble on in fantasy.
