An already difficult 2014 season for Colin Kaepernick got even tougher after news of Vernon Davis' latest injury.

According to the 49ers Twitter account, Davis suffered a back injury in the third quarter of their Week 4 affair against the Philadelphia Eagles:

Davis was later ruled out for the game, via the 49ers:

After the game, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle and Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com provided an update:

This is the second time Davis has been slowed by injury this year. He missed the San Francisco 49ers' Week 3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals with a bruised ankle. Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group reported a few days after the game that the veteran tight end was walking around fine.

You can't overstate Davis' importance to the Niners' passing game. He was second to Anquan Boldin in both receptions (52) and receiving yards (850) in 2013. He also added 13 touchdowns.

Inman wrote about what appears to be the not-so-coincidental effect on the San Francisco offense when Davis is absent, via the San Jose Mercury News:

"

The 49ers have lost all four games he hasn't suited up for since 2007, not to mention their past two regular-season defeats at Seattle where he prematurely exited because of a concussion and hamstring strain.

Davis' ankle injury forced him out the final 10 minutes of the Sept. 14 home-opening loss to the Bears. One snap after he left, the Bears intercepted Colin Kaepernick for a third time and promptly turned it into an insurance touchdown in their 28-20 win.

"

Without Davis, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman could be forced to use more four- or five-receiver sets, which isn't a natural look for San Francisco.

Kaepernick went 29-of-37 for 245 yards and a touchdown in the defeat to the Cardinals. Those numbers aren't bad, but ideally, Kaepernick is more efficient with his throws. Removing Davis placed him outside his comfort zone. The team also seemingly abandoned its power-rushing attack, with Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde receiving a combined nine attempts.

The 2014 season got off to a rocky start as San Francisco came out of the gate at 1-2. While that record was no reason to panic, the margin for error in the competitive NFC West is extremely small, so the 49ers have little room to slip up the rest of the way.

Taking Davis out of the equation will only make things more difficult.
