With the 21st Pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins Select:

Benjamin FarquharApr 18, 2008

After an incredible run at the end of the 2007 season, the Washington Redskins should expect nothing less than a deep run into the playoffs for the upcoming year.

Todd Collins led the team to four victories after Jason Campbell went down with a season ending knee injury in week 13. Collins, 35, who was a backup quarterback in Kansas City before signing with the Redskins as a free agent, had not taken a snap in a regular season game in over ten years.

The Redskins’ coaching staff has been completely rejuvenated as well. After the departure of Joe Gibbs, Snyder quickly hired Jim Zorn to be the offensive coordinator. Zorn was the Seattle Seahawks quarterback coach for seven years.

2025 Draft Picks Ready For Leap 🐸

A week later, Zorn was promoted to the head coaching job, a move that left many players upset and many fans confused.

With the 21st pick in the upcoming draft, the Redskins should be able to find the type of player that they are looking for. These are three spots that the Redskins should look to fill…

Wide Receiver

The Redskins were certainly hurt when Santana Moss wentĀ down injured early in the season. This led to many dropped balls and blown routes. Antwaan Randle El can get the job done, but not as Jason Campbell’s main target.

Now that Al Saunders and Joe Gibbs have departed, it will be interesting to see how new offensive coordinator Sherman Smith decides to handle the play calling.

Gibbs and Saunders were known for their "conservative" play calls. However, with the addition of a home run threat wideout, and the consistency of Campbell's arm, the Redskins could easily become a threat down the field.

1. Limas Sweed (Texas)

His 6-foot-4 stature gives Campbell a big body to throw to. However, at the combine he ranĀ  a 4.54-second 40-yard-dash, which raises questions about his ability to beat an NFL cornerback down the field. Most believe that Sweed will be a top-25 draft pick.

2. Devin Thomas (Michigan State)

Only 6-foot-1, but he ran a 4.32-second 40-yard-dash at the combine, which makes up for the lack of height. He also weighs just as much as Sweed so the Skins do not need to worry about the physical aspect. He caught 75 balls for over 1,226 yards last season for the Spartans.

3. James Hardy (Indiana)

A 6-foot-five, 217-pound monster of a receiver. He had aĀ ridiculous 37-inch vertical at the combine, so stack those 37 inches on top of a 6'5 frame and Campbell is looking at one hell of a season. During the combine drills he dropped only two passes. The only problem is his character.

Steal Pick: Desean Jackson (California)

His 5-foot-9, 169-pound frame is not intimating, but he makes up for it by being the new Ted Ginn, only faster. Jackson ran a 4.3-second 40-yard-dash at the combine and has a 34.5 inch vertical. Not only a receiver can also be a return specialist.

Projected Pick

The Redskins will be extremely lucky if Jackson falls all the way to 21. If they do select a wide receiver, it will be hard decision between Sweed and Hardy.

Safety

After the shocking death of Sean Taylor, Washington was at a loss in the secondary. They will need to find a safety that can work well with Laron Landry, who was selected in the first round last year.

1. Kenny Phillips (Miami)

This guy is an absolute freak. He reminds some of Sean Taylor before he started getting unnecessary-roughness penalties for breathing on somebody. At 6-foot-2, he is decently sized and he did run a 4.54-second 40 at the combine, but the 34-inch vertical is hard to ignore. He had four interceptions in just nine games.

2. Josh Barrett (Arizona State)

At 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, his speed is his greatest asset. He ran a 4.35-second 40 at the combine, which will help bump him way up in the draft. He played every game in 2006 and had 82 tackles and three interceptions.

3. Tyrell Johnson (Arkansas State)

His small size at 5'11 could be a problem in a league where the averageĀ reciever height is over 6'1, however, with a 32 inch vertical he can make up the size. Ran a decent 4.47 40 at the combine.

Steal Pick: Kenny Phillips

Projected Pick

If Phillips has already been selected by the time the Redskins are on the clock, then they will not select another safety. This class is so weak that once Phillips is gone, Washington should focus on adding to another part of their team.

Defensive End

The Redskins were ranked in the bottom five in sacks for the second straight year. The lack of pressure from the defensive line is affecting the secondary and making it easier for opposing quarterbacks to pick them apart. The Redskins must find someone who can get to the quarterback and make a play for the defense.

1. Phillip Merling (Clemson)

6-foot-4 and 276 pounds, Merling did not work out at the combine this year. However, his stats are hard to ignore. Merling is a beast that can manhandle any offensive lineman in the ACC, proof he can get it done at the professional level.

2. Derrick Harvey (Florida)

At 6-foot-4 and 271 pounds, he is suited for the 3-4 defensive, which does not fit with Washington's style. But this kid is an athlete, much like Jevan Kearse when he first entered the NFL. He has a 32-inch vertical, which shows his athleticism.

3. Quentin Groves (Auburn)

The 6-foot-3, 259-pound player he benched 225 pounds 30 times at the combine. Much like Harvey, he is simply an athlete at his size. It would be easy to see the Redskins making him put on a good 30 pounds before he suits up in September.

Steal Pick: Vernon Gholston (Ohio State)

Talk about the biggest steal in the history of the NFL Draft. It would be hard to believe that Gholston would drop all the way to 21, but hey...it could happen.

Projected Pick

The Redskins will pick Merling from Clemson if he is still there. Simply stated, Washington needs to find a way to get to the quarterback and create some pressure.

Overall Projected Pick

With so many places to fill, Draft Day will be an adventure for the Redskins. However, if everything falls into place, Washington will pick Limas Sweed from Texas. His height and vertical leap make him the type of threat that will go well alongside of Santana Moss and Randle El.

The only question is: Will Sweed still be waiting for his phone to ring at the 21st pick?
