2013 NFL Draft Grades: Breaking Down Scores for Every Team

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Grading the NFL draft before players have had a chance to hit the field is tough, but that doesn't mean it's not a fun exercise for analysts and fans alike.

There were plenty of questionable decisions made by general managers in the 2013 NFL draft. Some will inevitably turn out badly, while others will certainly be lauded in the years to come as the players prove themselves on the field.

The Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers made bold moves to move up in the first round in order to land players they didn't want to miss out on. Dion Jordan and Eric Reid will likely both see plenty of action as rookies for their new teams, but it remains to be seen if they were worth such a risk.

On the other side of things, teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles made their marks landing excellent players in the latter rounds.

From start to finish, this year's draft was a treat for NFL enthusiasts. Here's an early look at how I graded each team's haul of new players. After the grades, I'll provide deeper analysis for why a few teams received these grades.

Cleveland Browns: C

If Barkevious Mingo ends up turning into the second coming of Lawrence Taylor, I'll gladly eat my hat.

I haven't been high on Mingo since the middle of last year. He is a one-trick pony who struggled to perform the one trick he's good at, which is rushing the passer.

Taking him with the No. 6 overall pick while Dee Milliner was on the board still doesn't make sense to me, but Michael Lombardi has a plan and he's sticking to it.

Leon McFadden may prove to be a really good player, and of the five picks Lombardi made in this year's draft I like this one the best.

Drafting safety Jamoris Slaughter in the sixth round while Bacarri Rambo was still on the board was also a head-scratcher—especially considering Slaughter wasn't even the best Notre Dame safety still available.

From my perspective, Lombardi's moves didn't help the Browns this year. Perhaps Mingo will be able to perform at a higher level in the NFL than he did at LSU, but I don't see it happening.

Cincinnati Bengals: A-

Mike Brown put together a solid—nay, a phenomenal—draft.

Cincinnati's roster was already good enough to make the playoffs the past two seasons—with a young quarterback, no less. Somehow, Brown brought on a few players who will make an immediate impact.

Giovani Bernard and Tyler Eifert will both have a chance to start this year, and Eifert will likely become one of Andy Dalton's favorite targets before the start of Week 1.

Safety Shawn Williams will have a chance to earn a starting spot, and linebacker Sean Porter was an absolute steal in the fourth round. Both of these defenders will likely become integral members of the team's starting defense in the years to come.

And don't even get me started about the Margus Hunt pick.

Hunt has so much raw, untapped potential that Brown should just bottle up his essence and hire some scientists to create an army of clones to stock his defensive line.

St. Louis Rams: A-

Les Snead and his team of scouts operated on all cylinders during this year's draft.

Moving up for Tavon Austin was gutsy, but the level of consistent production he'll give Sam Bradford can't be quantified. Drafting Austin's college teammate Stedman Bailey in the bottom of Round 3 was a stroke of genius as well.

Both receivers are quick, shifty guys who create space with ease and who can take any play the distance for six points—perfect players for the quick-hitting offense Bradford loves to run.

Landing Alec Ogletree at the bottom of the first round was an incredible value. Years from now when Ogletree is a perennial All-Pro outside linebacker, 30 other teams will regret not taking a chance on this young man.

Another exceptional value was Snead's thievery of Barrett Jones in the middle of Round 4. If not for a painful foot injury that required surgery, Jones would surely have been selected much earlier. His skill and flexibility as an interior lineman will serve this team well in the years to come.
