Terron Armstead: Full Profile of Combine's Speedy Lineman
Arkansas-Pine Bluff offensive lineman Terron Armstead did the unthinkable at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday, running the 40-yard dash in an unofficial time of 4.65 seconds, according to NFL.com's Dan Hanzus.
At 6'5", 306 pounds, Armstead's accomplishment was beyond impressive. Some quarterbacks and tight ends don't even come close to that mark at the combine, let alone an offensive tackle. It's safe to say that Armstead's explosive time won't be topped anytime soon.
So, who is this lightning-fast lineman?
Let's take a minute to get to know combine superstar Terron Armstead a little bit better.
High School Track Star
In addition to excelling on the football field at Cahokia High School in Illinois, Armstead was a standout on the track and field team, dominating in the shot put.
From the looks of it, he could have made an impact running the 100-meter dash as well.
Despite receiving a number of Division I football offers, Armstead chose Arkansas-Pine Bluff because coach Monte Coleman agreed to let him participate in track and field at the college level (few other coaches were willing to take the risk).
Clearly, Armstead's passion for track and field has paid off with this unprecedented 40-yard dash time.
College Career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Armstead was a star for both the Golden Lions on the gridiron and on the track and field team during his time in college. He won All-SWAC football honors three times and was an eight-time SWAC champion in track and field.
He played more than three dozen games throughout his college football career and started all 12 this past season at left tackle.
His strong play helped the Golden Lions to a 10-2 finish in 2012 that included the SWAC championship. With that speed, however, it's a wonder Arkansas-Pine Bluff didn't run plays for Armstead.
Stock Rises at East-West Shrine Game, Combine
Even before the combine, Armstead boosted his draft stock with a strong performance at the East-West Shrine Game last month. He showed that, in addition to possessing quickness and athleticism, he has some power to sustain blocks and become a force at the next level.
Although Armstead can improve in several key areas, his athleticism, as witnessed at the combine, sets him apart and will now have NFL scouts, coaches and executives looking at him in a different light.
His incredible achievements at the combine make him a rock star heading into April's 2013 NFL draft.
