Ryan Mathews Misses Chargers Practice Following Minor Car Accident

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was involved in a two-vehicle collision Monday night, and while the injuries he sustained were described as "minor," it was enough to keep him out of the Chargers' practice Tuesday afternoon.

U-T San Diego's Michael Gehlken tweeted out the following update.

"

Debbie Baker, also of U-T San Diego, reported on the details of the crash. Baker reports that Mathews, 24, "was entering east Interstate 8 at Sports Arena Boulevard when he lost control of his 2010 BMW and hit another vehicle."

She added that he was "driving too fast" and that "he complained of pain and was taken to a hospital to be examined."

She added that the other involved party escaped without injury, thankfully, and that California Highway Patrol officer Mary Bailey said that drugs or alcohol did not appear to be involved.

While the Chargers would undoubtedly like to see their franchise running back avoid needlessly putting himself in harm's way, this incident should not impact Mathews' upcoming season. That is tremendously relieving news for the Chargers, as their 2010 first-round pick figures to be a big part of their offense.

After struggling with fumbles and production his rookie season, Mathews had a nice sophomore effort, gaining 1,091 rushing yards with six TDs at 4.9 yards per carry. He also added 455 receiving yards.

Mathews reportedly showed up to camp in "great shape." With Mike Tolbert—with whom Mathews had been sharing carries—gone, Mathews figures to get as much action as his body can handle.
