Tim Tebow Will Play Special Teams for New York Jets

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

People have always believed Tim Tebow was special.

The New York Jets think so, which is why they plan on using their special player on special teams.

Mark Sanchez enters training camp as the No. 1 quarterback, but the Jets want to ensure the most famous backup in the league is able to see the field.

New York Daily News beat reporter Manish Mehta spoke with special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff on Tuesday and gave a detailed enough description of Tebow’s potential responsibilities, suggesting No. 15 will be on the field for multiple situations:

"

If a team squibs it at you or pops it at you, he might be the perfect guy to put in that could make an adjustment. If they kick it deep, he could block. If they squib it or pop it, he could be a guy that we'd have with a ball in his hands.… Jerricho Cotchery did a nice job for us in that role. Brad Smith, before he became the guy, did some of that for us. So, it's just a situational thing.

"

The Jets are crazy, if you ask me. The Denver Broncos flirted with him at tight end, but that was a much less dangerous idea.

Special teams roles like that are relegated to backup receivers with good hands. Tebow, even as the second-string QB, is too valuable to stick out there. He can effectively play special teams because of his terrific footwork and strength, but there's no question he'll have a giant bull's-eye on his back for eager gunners trying to knock him into next Wednesday.

Yet, Westhoff stresses that the team isn't going to be throwing him out there on every special teams opportunity (via New York Daily News):

"

I'm not counting on Tebow coming in and being a hardcore four-team special teams player. We have a limited role for him, but it will be one that presents problems. That's what Tebow is all about. He presents problems to good football teams in a lot of aspects.

"

The Jets are clearly trying to tell their fans that Tebow will be on the field, and you should be excited. But why would any team want to squib it in his direction?

I have a bad feeling this is not going to end well.
