Kyle Zimmer may be one of the more interesting first-round picks in the upcoming MLB draft. This interest stems from both his background as well as his future potential.

Zimmer is currently listed at 6'4", 220 pounds as a junior on the University of San Francisco website. He is obviously an intimidating presence on the mound.

However, when he was being recruited as a junior in high school, according to an article by Tom FitzGerald in the San Francisco Chronicle, he was a 5'11", 185-pound third baseman who only pitched because his team needed him in a pinch.

He barely even pitched during his freshman year of college either, and now as a junior he is being talked about as at least a top-10 pick in the upcoming draft.

How is this possible?

Jeff Fletcher of wrote an article about Zimmer, and in that he interviewed a Major League Baseball crosschecker who gave his opinion on the young right-hander.

"He's really good," he said. "He at times will pitch with four above-average Major League pitches. ... He's got some adjustments he needs to make in his delivery, but his pure stuff is Major League ready right now."

Just think about the natural talent. He has been pitching seriously for two years. Granted, during that time his body matured quite a bit, but his pitching has improved exponentially.

In MLB draft, teams are obviously looking for future potential, but when Zimmer is already being touted with such high praise, it is scary to think about what might happen if this growth and development continues at the same rate for another year or two.
