Fantasy Baseball 2012: Emergency Waiver-Wire Pitcher for May 15

Jay ClemonsJun 7, 2018

Mixed-league roto owners, are you in need of a waiver-wire pitcher before Tuesday's slate of games?

Here's my free-agent choice (from the majority of 12-team leagues) for one day of fantasy stardom:

Wei-Yin Chen, Baltimore Orioles (vs. Yankees)

1. Chen (3-0, 2.68 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 28 strikeouts) hasn't allowed more than three runs or surrendered more than three walks in any start this season.

2. Chen has earned a victory in every even-numbered outing to date; he's been very good in odd-numbered starts, too.

3. Among the Baltimore starters, Chen has yielded the fewest runs (tied), earned runs, walks and home runs.

4. Against the Yankees on April 10, Chen struck out six batters (giving up only one walk), while allowing two runs over seven innings.

The Next Five for Tuesday

1. Wade Miley (Diamondbacks) at Dodgers—Miley catches a break against the shorthanded Dodgers, thanks to Matt Kemp's hamstring injury.

2. Bartolo Colon (Athletics) at Angels—On April 13, six days after Colon allowed seven runs in a start, he blanked the opposition. Can he repeat the feat, coming off last week's seven-run meltdown?

3. Dillon Gee (Mets) vs. Brewers—A good bet for six or seven strikeouts against the Brewers. Unfortunately, he's also a reliable pick to surrender four-plus runs.

4. Henderson Alvarez (Blue Jays) vs. Rays—He's killing it on the ERA and WHIP fronts, but the strikeout rate leaves plenty to be desired.

5. Jordan Lyles (Astros) at Phillies—The kid showed flashes of fantasy goodness at the age of 20 last year. Hopefully, he'll take another meaningful step in his second MLB promotion.

A Look Back

Friday's selection: Detroit's Rick Porcello
Final tally: Five innings, four earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
