NFL Draft 2012: Colts GM Claims They've Determined Who Top Pick Will Be

Ryan PhillipsMay 31, 2018

The Indianapolis Colts have come to a decision on who the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft will be.

According to the Indianapolis Star, rookie general manager Ryan Grigson claimed during a pre-draft press conference that the team had "exhausted the process" and "pretty much made up our mind."

Grigson and the Colts haven't said who the pick will be, though he did give praise to both Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

Indianapolis could make the announcement anytime it wanted to between now and April 26, the day of the draft's first round. The Colts could even sign their target to a contract now if they so choose.

The Colts were in attendance at Luck's pro day at Stanford, put him through a private workout and also met with him in Indianapolis. While they also attended Griffin's pro day at Baylor, they have not met with him privately or put him through a workout. That is telling.

Many believe that Griffin has closed the gap on Luck as the draft process has gone along. While that may be true, it doesn't change the fact that Luck is the better quarterback. In fact, he's the best, most complete quarterback prospect to enter the NFL in more than a decade.

During his final two seasons at Stanford, Luck completed 71 percent of his passes for 6,855 yards, with 69 touchdowns and just 18 interceptions. During his three years in college, Luck threw just 22 interceptions in 1,064 attempts. That is remarkable.

Luck has every tool a team could possibly want in a franchise quarterback. He has prototypical size at 6'4" and 235 pounds, and his arm strength and accuracy are excellent.

The thing that separates Luck from other top prospects is the cerebral element of his game. He just understands football. He is outstanding at reading defenses and anticipates what opponents are going to do. His outstanding feet and mobility in and out of the pocket are a nice assets too.

On top of all of that, Luck is a great kid with off-the-charts intangibles, a leader on and off the field.

Griffin had a phenomenal year in 2011 and rightly won the Heisman Trophy. He may well turn out to be an excellent NFL quarterback, but Luck is a once-in-a-generation talent the Colts simply cannot afford to pass up.
