NFL Trade Rumors: Bucs Put CB Aqib Talib on Block 1 Week Prior to 2012 NFL Draft
Aqib Talib's four-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has hardly been smooth sailing. He's recorded 17 interceptions since entering the league but has yet to play a full 16-game season.
Update: Wednesday, April 18th, 5:50 p.m. ET
You can temper the hype surrounding a possible trade. Tampa Bay Times' Greg Stroud reports there is no interest in a trade according to coach Greg Schiano.
"Coach Greg Schiano on reports of trading Aqib Talib; 'All I can tell you is we have zero interest in doing that...there's no truth to that."
— Rick Stroud (@NFLSTROUD) April 18, 2012"
He's looked like a Pro Bowl player at times, and he's looked like a guy lucky to have a job at times.
Now the 26-year-old star is potentially on his way out.
Scott Reynolds at PewterReport.com claims a league source tells him that Talib is being made available to teams via trade—although the Bucs have yet to confirm the report.
The move makes sense with Talib set to go on trial for aggravated assault with a handgun in Texas on June 25. The Bucs know they won't get too much for him, but with Asante Samuel also reportedly on the block and the draft less than a week away, the time to move the troubled CB is now.
The Bucs are in position to select the draft's best defensive prospect at No. 5 overall, LSU's Morris Claiborne, and he just happens to play cornerback.
New coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik want to acquire more picks in this year's draft, so pick(s) are likely what it will cost to land Talib. Tampa Bay has even been rumored as a potential mover on draft day in effort to land more picks in the earlier portion of the selection process.
Schiano is going to do things his way, and Dominik wouldn't have hired him if he wasn't on board with potentially radical changes.
Talib was a first-round pick four years ago, but Schiano needs guys who will fall in line with his methods in his first NFL head coaching stint. Talib has great talent, but he's not a guy Schiano would ever be able to trust.
The timing of this news and the potential move in general make complete sense. It remains to be seen, however, if any team is willing to trade for a player potentially facing a suspension.
