Bill Parcells: Minnesota Vikings Reportedly Pursuing Big Tuna to Run Team

Jun 7, 2018

The New Orleans Saints have been going hard after former head coaching legend Bill Parcells, but they may not be alone.

UPDATE: Wednesday, April 4, 10:30 a.m. ET by Donald Wood

With the recent talk that the Vikings were kicking tires on the services of Bill Parcells as football czar, Minnesota has confirmed that they inquired, but insist it was not recently.

ESPN Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul) is reporting about the time in which the reported conversations took place:

"

The Vikings did approach Bill Parcells about running their football operation, a source with knowledge of the situation said on Wednesday, but those conversations happened a long time ago and there has been no recent contact between the sides.

"

This story may have been released on purpose to jack up the price Parcells is trying to get from the Saints who we have found out via the Drew Brees contract negotiations are more tight fisted then they let on.

It could also be a random story that is breaking late. Either way, all signs point to no Big Tuna in Minnesota’s pond.

---------End of Update--------

Despite the connection to former offensive coordinator and current Saints head coach Sean Payton and his yearlong suspension, the Big Tuna may find that opportunities elsewhere are more lucrative.

The New York Post is reporting on the Minnesota Vikings’ interest in hiring Parcells as the team’s football czar:

"

The Post has learned Vikings owner Zygi Wilf is putting the hard sell on the former Giants and Jets coach to head to Minnesota and “run the show.’’ The Saints are seeking a replacement for the 2012 season for suspended head coach Sean Payton while Wilf, who has strong New Jersey ties, is simply seeking an upgrade over coach Leslie Frazier, and GM Rick Spielman and believes Parcells is the guy.

"

As bad as it turned out in Miami for Parcells, there has to be legitimate doubt about whether or not the 71-year-old wants to go through all the garbage that comes with being the head of everything football for an NFL franchise.

What It Means

While the question had been about whether or not Parcells would come out of retirement, it’s now about which opportunity he should take, should he come back.

Sean Payton asked Parcells as a friend to help him by taking over the Saints while he was suspended.

They should have known that as soon as the more aggressive owners heard the Big Tuna was back on the market that he would be flooded with offers. Coaching talent like Parcells doesn’t come around very often, and owners understand that.

What’s Next?

Parcells has to sit down with his family and see what is best for all parties involved. The man is 71 years old, and taking care of an NFL team can be an intense burden.

If the two-time Super Bowl winner thinks that he not only has the physical ability to hold up to this job, but is dedicated enough to really make a difference, he has two amazing choices.

The truth is that Parcells should just stay retired and enjoy his life without all the drama that would follow him around his tenure wherever he went.
