Indianapolis Colts Mock Draft: Most Important Targets After Andrew Luck

Matt MadsenMar 23, 2012

With a team bereft of talent at a number of positions, the Indianapolis Colts will be in a position to take the best player available with nearly every pick.

The Colts are just hoping to find a few players who can play, since their current roster is easily the worst in the entire league.

After taking the best player available with the first overall pick, Andrew Luck, the Colts will look to shore up a depth chart that is severely lacking. With an offense that couldn't score points and a defense in transition, there will be no shortage of needs for Indy.

Let's look at a few players who could make an immediate impact.

Devon Still, Nose Tackle

1 of 5

With the signings of Cory Redding and Tom Zbikowski, it's become clear that new head coach Chuck Pagano is transforming the Colts' 4-3 defense into a 3-4.

But now the question is, how?

With so many switches to be made, it could be a couple seasons before the Colts go 3-4 full-time. However, if they hope to line up in any 3-4 looks, they need to secure a nose tackle that can hold up at the point of attack.

While Devon Still doesn't have elite size, he makes up for it with toughness and determination.

He plays high too often and needs to learn to use leverage better to succeed at the next level. NFL coaching should help get him there.

This is also a pick of extreme need, since the Colts don't really have a player who can line up at NT. An argument could be made for Drake Nevis, but he is even more undersized than Still.

Stephon Gilmore, Cornerback

2 of 5

If Devon Still isn't available, Stephon Gilmore would be an equally effective pick.

The Colts have lacked any quality at corner since the release of Kelvin Hayden. In their Tampa 2 scheme, corners are not always valued highly, and the Colts have drafted accordingly.

But in the 3-4, Pagano will almost certainly look to incorporate significantly more man-to-man coverages, often leaving his corners on an island against receivers.

With the corners currently under contract with the Colts, that would be a disaster.

Gilmore adds a bigger, physical corner that isn't afraid to come down and give support in stopping the run. In a division with Arian Foster, Chris Johnson and Maurice Jones-Drew, that's a good thing.

Gilmore has above-average speed and size and displayed excellent ball skills at South Carolina.

While he is graded as a first-round pick, personnel moves around the NFL could cause him to slip into the early second round, exactly where the Colts would like him.

Rueben Randle, Wide Receiver

3 of 5

Despite mediocre and inconsistent quarterback play in college, Rueben Randle was still able to post nearly 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns.

And the Colts need wide receivers.

Of all the Colts' weaknesses, receiver might be number one simply for lack of players. They currently have only three receivers with NFL experience signed for the 2012 season.

Andrew Luck is going to need targets, and Randle won't disappoint him. His 6'3", 215-pound frame is NFL-ready, and he has the capability to track deep balls, averaging over 17 yards per catch last season. He's a do-it-all receiver whose draft stock is reflective more of his college situation than his ability.

If he rolls into the third round, the Colts should take a good look at the former LSU wideout.

Ladarius Green, Tight End

4 of 5

Ladarius Green could be the next Marques Colston.

At nearly 6'6", the former Ragin' Cajun has ridiculous range. By far his most attractive skill is his aptitude for attacking the ball away from his body. With his long arms and elite height, that can make it very difficult for defenders to get to the ball before him.

Rated as a tight end, Green figures to be undervalued. But he figures to be split wide in the NFL, at least until he can add some bulk to his frame.

Since receiving tight ends are extremely in vogue right now, it seems teams would be excited to get their hands on such a versatile pass-catcher.

Andrew Luck relied heavily on a similar target last season in Coby Fleener. Since Fleener will be drafted before the third round, Green is a more than capable substitute.

Mychal Kendricks, Inside Linebacker

5 of 5

Depending on how they grade Mychal Kendricks, the Colts may be tempted to make him their second-round draft choice.

While they do have significant needs elsewhere, the California product is extremely intriguing. Not only was he the 2011 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, but he also showed up huge at the NFL scouting combine.

Kendricks led the entire group of linebackers in 40-yard dash time, vertical leap and broad jump. His average body size shouldn't work against him, and his quickness and instincts are top-end for a linebacker.

Honestly, I don't know how this kid isn't a first-rounder.

Inside linebacker isn't the Colts' most pressing need, but they did release long-time defensive captain and middle linebacker Gary Brackett earlier in free agency.
