NFL Draft 2012: 5 Backup QBs San Diego Chargers Must Be Looking at
There is no doubt the quarterback position is probably the least of the Chargers' worries going into this year's draft. However, the past has proven every team needs to have a quality backup no matter who your quarterback is.
Billy Volek has been the long time backup for years now, but it's probably time the Chargers look for a younger guy to have for Philip Rivers. Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III have dominated the draft talks by all by assuring they will be going one and two. However, there are some solid quarterbacks towards the back end of the draft.
Should Norv Turner and the Chargers decide to address the backup quarterback position this year, these are five guys they could look to draft.
Nick Foles, Arizona
1 of 5Nick Foles has real NFL size and a skill set transferable to the next level. Standing at 6'5'' and weighing in at 243 lbs, he compares well to Philip Rivers' stature. Last season he completed 67 percent of his passes for over 3,000 yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
He struggled late in the season protecting the football, but could still be a viable backup.
B.J. Coleman, UT-Chattanooga
2 of 5B.J. Coleman may not be a household name but he was a solid quarterback in college. Injuries slowed him down, causing him to miss five games, but he still completed 61 percent of his passes.
Coleman has a big arm along with the kind of talent that needs to be developed. He is the perfect option as a backup to a successful quarterback like Rivers. He also has the necessary skills needed to come into a game if needed.
Ryan Lindley, San Diego State
3 of 5The hometown kid has to get a look right? Ryan Lindley is a big kid at 6'4'' and 229 lbs, with a very big arm. His problem is he can be wildly inaccurate at times. Last season he only completed 53 percent of his passes.
Lindley was able to increase his touchdown totals the last three seasons as a starter, finishing with 28 last year. He operated a pro-style offense, which does play into his advantage. He might be worth a look in the later rounds as a project for Norv Turner.
Dominique Davis, East Carolina
4 of 5For some reason Dominique Davis was not invited to the combine. His interception number was high last season, at 19, even though he completed 68 percent of his passes.
Davis is very rough around the edges but does display solid physical tools. He might be worth a look at the end of the draft as a developmental quarterback willing to learn from Norv Turner and Phillip Rivers.
Kellen Moore, Boise State
5 of 5Kellen Moore is the wild card quarterback in the draft. On one side you see a player who put up almost 4,000 yards last year with 43 touchdowns. He also completed 74 percent of his passes.
On the other side, Moore is only 6'0'' and 197 lbs, and he lacks the arm strength needed to be a big time quarterback in the NFL. Moore is a winner though and would be willing to be a career backup as that's probably all he has as an option.
Even Chase Daniels is a backup in the league for the great Drew Brees.
