NFL Combine 2012: RGIII, Wide Receivers, Running Backs Take Stage for STL Rams

Shane GrayFeb 26, 2012

Today, Robert Griffin III takes center stage in anticipation of the 2012 NFL Draft, and nobody is pulling harder for the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback of the Baylor Bears than the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams have stated emphatically that Sam Bradford will not be available in any scenario, according to CBS Sports, so the better RGIII runs today and tests today (although he will not throw), the higher his value soars and the higher the value the Rams No. 2 overall pick becomes.

With that, do not be surprised to see Rams head coach Jeff Fisher and St. Louis front office members sitting in the stands with bullhorns and pom poms cheering hard for RGIII. Of course, I am kidding, but quietly inside, they will be pulling intensely for a big day from the potential franchise quarterback.

Earlier in the week, RGIII put doubts to bed about his height, measuring 6'2". His stock could have potentially took a hit had he measured under 6'1"—even with the NFL success of sub 6'1" QBs like Drew Brees and Mike Vick.

Although it appears obvious that the Rams will not be watching the aforementioned RGIII as a potential QB in St. Louis, they will be watching a myriad of wide receivers and running back prospects today (as well as some QBs who could be targets in the late rounds of the NFL Draft).

To see five of the premiere wide receivers that St. Louis could covet in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft, please look here

Some of those featured in the above linked piece (and others) who the Rams could target include Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State, Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina, Michael Floyd of Notre Dame, Kendall Wright of Baylor, Mohamed Sanu of Rutgers, Reuben Randle of LSU and Dwight Jones of North Carolina.

As for running backs, Trent Richardson of Alabama, the consensus No. 1 running back available, will not participate in the NFL Combine due to injury, according to ESPN.  He is considered a virtual lock to go in the top 10 to 15 picks, and it is not out of the question that St. Louis could select him if they trade down in the draft.

Other running backs to keep an eye on today who could theoretically end up in the blue and gold this Fall include LaMichael James of Oregon, Isaiah Pead of Cincinnati and, my guy, Ronnie Hillman of San Diego State, among others.

Some late-round QB options to look at today include Case Keenum of Houston and Chandler Harnish of Northern Illinois.
