2012 NFL Draft: Indy Would Be Insane to Consider Robert Griffin over Andrew Luck

Paul GrossingerJun 7, 2018

Yes, insane.

Robert Griffin III is an amazing athlete, but the Indianapolis Colts would be insane to consider drafting him over Andrew Luck.

Griffin had an outstanding 2011 season.  He led the Baylor Bears to a 9-3 record and won the Heisman Trophy over Luck.  He even increased his completion percentage to over 70%, which separates him from other fast, mobile quarterbacks—like Vince Young—whose passing abilities were not as strong.

But, many pundits consider Luck is the best NFL quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning.

That is high, high praise, considering that highly touted quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford and others have been drafted since 1998.

Most importantly, what it suggests is that Luck is a safe, intelligent pick for the future of the Colts franchise.  Although its impossible to know if he will live up to that kind of hype, his makeup, talent and performance suggest it would be almost impossible for him not to succeed as a franchise quarterback in the NFL.

Luck has the ability to lead an NFL team.  He has the size, skills and arm to succeed.  His coach David Shaw—an informed, though admittedly biased source—considers Luck to be the most advanced college quarterback out there in terms of his ability to act as an on-field offensive coordinator and run the offense.

That sounds like what the Colts have run for the last dozen years.

So its clear, Luck is the best, safest option to lead to the Colts moving forward.
