MLB Power Rankings: See Where Your Team Stands

Mike GrofsickJun 3, 2018

After each team's first full week of games, there are a few surprises around the majors.

Teams that people had written off, like the Dodgers and Mets, have gotten off to fast starts, while powerhouse favorites like the Phillies and Angels have had a rough go of it.

That's one of the many reasons to love baseball, though. Nothing ever works out exactly the way that people believe it will.

Who knows where these teams will stand at the end of the year, but let's check out this week's power rankings.

30 Through 25

1 of 5

30. Minnesota Twins (2-7): Not much has gone right for the Twins so far. Although they are eighth in the majors in team batting average, they are 27th in runs scored. Mixing that with the 26th-ranked ERA is not a good sign moving forward.

29. San Diego Padres (2-8): The Padres are on the interstate. Through 10 games, the Pads have a team batting average of just .191. They have been getting decent pitching, but you're not going to win many ballgames hitting under .200.

28. Pittsburgh Pirates (3-6): The Pirates started off well, taking two of three from the Phillies, but then it went downhill, with them losing their next five before winning again yesterday. The Pirates are last in the MLB in essentially every main hitting category

27. Chicago Cubs (3-7): New season, same old Cubbies. The starting pitching hasn't been bad, but a thin lineup and bad bullpen have combined to help the Cubs lose seven of their first 10 games.

26. Kansas City Royals (3-6): All of the young talent that had a big year for the Royals last season hasn't quite started producing yet this year. They could also use some better pitching.

25. Houston Astros (4-5): Already the third team from the NL Central, the Astros haven't gotten off to the worst start, but there's really just not much to work with in Houston. They may have nice runs every once in a while, but they're my bet to clean up the cellar in the NL Central.

24 Through 19

2 of 5

24. Oakland Athletics (4-6): The pitching has been great to start the season, but the offense has been as anemic as it's been the past few years. Their pitching staff isn't going to be able to support the offense over the course of a full season.

23. Baltimore Orioles (5-4): Another team that got off to a surprisingly fast start, only to come back to reality pretty quickly. The Orioles have a decent lineup, but their pitching won't be able to maintain its current performance.

22. Colorado Rockies (4-5): As usual with the Rockies, the offense has been very good, but when the best ERA on your team is held by 49-year-old Jamie Moyer, that's usually not a good sign.

21. Cleveland Indians (4-4): The Indians are third in the majors in runs scored despite being 20th in batting average. This is a mix between them drawing a fair amount of walks and hitting a decent amount of home runs. Their pitching has been a solid mix of really good and really bad. It's hard to know what to think about this team right now.

20. Miami Marlins (4-6): Some people might have a problem with me putting the Marlins this low, but I said before the season even started that they were overrated. Their slow start hasn't surprised me at all.

19. Seattle Mariners (6-5): Seattle's pitching and hitting have both been average, but they are 29th in the majors in OBP, and I think this is more of how the season will look for the Mariners. Their pitching might do pretty well, but there just isn't a lot of offense.

18 Through 13

3 of 5

18. Chicago White Sox (5-3): The White Sox had a good week, going 4-1 and taking two of three from division favorite Detroit. However, the offense has been struggling, and Adam Dunn and Alex Rios still just look puzzled at the plate.

17. Milwaukee Brewers (4-6): Even after losing Prince Fielder, people still had high hopes for the Brewers, but things haven't started so well. The Brewers are 4-6 to start the season, and their team ERA of 5.65 is not just ugly, but also good for 29th in the league.

16. Cincinnati Reds (4-6): The Reds have had a real hard time scoring any runs or producing any kind of offense, for that matter. They are near the bottom of the majors in most offensive categories. With the lineup they have and the ballpark they play in, the offense should come around sooner rather than later.

15. Toronto Blue Jays (5-4): Like the Indians, the Blue Jays ranked high in the league in runs scored despite having a very low team batting average. Unlike the Indians, the Blue Jays are also below average in OBP, meaning they are getting some timely hitting. If that stops, they are in trouble.

14. New York Mets (6-3): The Mets have surprised a few people with their opening to the season. They have struggled to score runs, at only 26th in the majors, but their pitching has been outstanding and the top three in their rotation have completely shut down opposing offenses. Wright coming back so quickly from a broken pinky is going to be huge for the offense.

13. San Francisco Giants (4-5): After a rough start, the Giants went 4-2 this past week. However, Tim Lincecum looks just a little bit off right now. The rest of the pitching has been good, but the Giants just received the awful news that star closer Brian Wilson is going to miss the rest of the season after needing surgery on his elbow.

12. Boston Red Sox (4-5): The Red Sox lost five of their first six to start the season, and after the way last season ended, their fans weren't very happy. However, they rebounded nicely to win their next three games. The offense has looked great and is near the top of the league in most categories, but they're going to have to improve the pitching that is 28th in the league in ERA.

11. Tampa Bay Rays (4-5): After sweeping the Yankees to start the season, the Rays have lost five of their last six, and the reason would surprise most people. The Rays, who were thought to have one of the best rotations in baseball coming into this year, are dead last in the majors with a team ERA of a whopping 6.75.

10. Los Angeles Angels (3-6): The pressure of big offseason acquisitions has gotten to the Angels so far, leading to a rough 3-6 start. The pitching hasn't been pretty so far, and that is mostly the reason for the poor start. However, there is just too much talent on this team for them not to have a very successful season.

9. Philadelphia Phillies (4-5): The Phillies have gotten off to a slow start, and it's because of an offense that's just not scoring many runs. The Phillies will be carried by their pitching, as it's probably the best rotation in the majors, but it will have to been seen just how far their pitching can carry them.

8. Atlanta Braves (5-4): After getting swept by the Mets to open the season, the Braves have won five of their last six. Neither their pitching or their offense has been great, but they're doing enough to win ballgames. The return of Chipper Jones definitely gave the offense a boost.

7. Arizona Diamondbacks (6-3)- The DBacks have gotten a mix of both quality hitting and pitching in order to start the season 6-3. I would've liked to see them fare better than just 3-3 against the Padres and Rockies, but it was on the road.

6 Through 1

5 of 5

6. New York Yankees (5-4): After getting swept by the Rays, the Yankees came right back and swept the Orioles. After that, they took two out of three from the Angels in order to get back over .500 at 5-4. As is usually the case with the Yankees, they're scoring a lot of runs, but the pitching needs to improve.

5. Washington Nationals (7-3): Although the offense has been adequate, the reason for the Nationals' 7-3 start is clearly the pitching. The Nats have a major league-best 1.99 team ERA and .186 BAA. It will have to be seen if the pitching can hold up over the course of a season, but at least for right now, it's giving the Nationals a lot to believe in.

4. St. Louis Cardinals (7-3): Despite losing Albert Pujols in the offseason and then a bunch of players to injury, the Cardinals still sit at the top of the NL Central. This organization is ripe with position player depth, and they continue to showcase it. The Cardinals should still be the favorite to win what looks like is becoming a weak NL Central division.

3. Detroit Tigers (6-3): The Tigers have handled their business at home, going 5-1 to start the season. However, they dropped two of three at Chicago to put their record at 6-3. The offense has slugged its way out of the gate, and the pitching has done enough to win ballgames.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers (9-1)- Who would have guessed the Dodgers would have baseball's best record after 10 games? The Dodgers sit at 9-1 and have won six in a row behind the bat of Matt Kemp. The pitching has also been great, but Kemp looks like he could win games all by himself right now.

1. Texas Rangers (8-2): The offense has been very good, but who would have thought that through 10 games, the Rangers would be lead by their pitching staff. It sits at an AL-best 2.30 team ERA and is first in the majors with seven quality starts. If Neftali Feliz's first start was an indication of his season to come, watch out American League.
