2012 NFL Mock Draft: Seahawks Make Desperate Move for Ryan Tannehill

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

The Seattle Seahawks are in desperate need of a quarterback that can lead their offense, and that desperation could propel them to draft Ryan Tannehill out of Texas A&M with the 12th overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft.

The Seahawks have an impressive young roster, particularly on defense. This young defense will continue to get better next year, too.

Earl Thomas and Cam Chancellor are just starting to come into their own as one of the best pair of safeties in the NFL, and the defensive line of the Seahawks is about as stout as they come.

On offense, the Seahawks are a dominant running team. Marshawn Lynch is going to be a free agent come March 13, but I don't believe he will be tempted to leave Seattle. The Seahawks gave him a second chance when most of the league believed his career was over after taking a nosedive in Buffalo.

The offensive line is full of maulers, but they are lacking when it comes to pass protection. This was partly due to the fact that they dealt with injuries all year long.

The receiving corps is also an up-and-coming group. Doug Baldwin, Ben Obomanu, Golden Tate and Sydney Rice will be a dangerous group to contend with on Sundays.

The biggest issue for the 'Hawks is that Tavaris Jackson just isn't a good NFL quarterback. This will drive the Seahawks to take a huge leap in logic, drafting Tannehill way ahead of his true worth, which in my mind is somewhere at the top half of the second round.

It's a shame, really. I had pegged the Seahawks to take Matt Barkley here a couple of months ago. He would have been perfect, but he decided to stay in college for his senior year, making Tannehill's value inflate due to the sudden lack of top-level talent.

I'm not trying to suggest that Tannehill will be a bust. That's nearly impossible to predict. What I am saying is that the Seahawks would be much better off taking a player that is worth the pick. My choice would be the top defensive end left on the board.

Here is my latest mock draft, titled "Disaster Scenarios for Every NFL Team."
