Through five games, the NFL MVP race is shaping up to be a three-horse race. There are a couple of guys, Wes Welker and Darren McFadden, who might steal votes from those three if they continue on their current paces, but odds are it will come down to Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
Here are the top five NFL MVP candidates.

Aaron Rodgers is the leader right now. He is once again having a phenomenal season with 1,721 yards. The most impressive thing about his numbers is that he is doing it without any run game at all.
The question for Rodgers will be can he keep it up once the weather changes. It is a lot tougher to throw the ball all over the yard when the temperature is in the 20s and it is windy.

The thing that really gives Rodgers the edge over Tom Brady is his low number of interceptions. Brady has thrown for more yards, 1,874, and the same number of touchdowns, 14, but Brady has thrown six interceptions while Rodgers has thrown only two.

Brees is the other guy who will warrant consideration in the vote. He does not make the headlines like Rodgers and Brees, but his numbers are just as good. So far this season, he has thrown for 1,769 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Those numbers are good enough to get him a couple of votes, but still finish a good distance behind the top two.

McFadden is turning in quite the season. He currently leads the league in rushing yards, yards per attempt, yards per game and rushes of 20 or more yards.
It is tough for a running back to win an MVP in this day in age, but McFadden is going to get plenty of consideration if he continues on his current pace.
New England Patriots WR Wes Welker

Wes Welker is putting up some ridiculous numbers so far this season. He is averaging 148.0 yards per game. He currently leads the league in receiving. Steve Smith of the Panthers is second and has 131 yards less than Welker.
Welker obviously benefits from playing with Tom Brady, but Welker does a lot of the work himself with some pretty spectacular runs after the catch.
