MLB Playoffs: Who Will Triumph in the Yankees-Tigers ALDS Matchup?

0 of 5

Both the AL East winner and the AL Central winner will face off for the next few days, with Game 1 starting tonight at 8:37 PM. Both teams had great seasons, with New York going 97-65 and Detroit going 95-67.

Both teams are powered by strong offenses. They both have two of the best bullpens in the American League. The Tigers have two potential MVP candidates in Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera, while the Yankees boast arguably the best offense in the AL.

Game 1

1 of 5

Game 1 (I wrote this before the game started)

    C.C. Sabathia vs. Justin Verlander

Game 1 will be a tough one for the offenses. We have two of the very best pitchers in the game, with Verlander and Sabathia. It will be a close one, a pitching duel. Both Sabathia and Verlander will go at least seven innings with less than two runs allowed.

    Prediction: Tigers win 4-2

Cabrera will drive in three of the four runs and back up Verlander to get the victory, while Verlander shuts down the Yankees lineup.

Game 2

2 of 5

    Game 2

    Ivan Nova vs. Doug Fister

Despite how good Fister was during his half-year tenure with the Tigers, he won't be able to beat the Yankees offense. Ivan Nova will pitch very well in his first career postseason start, giving the Yankees a victory to tie the series up at one.

    Prediction: Yankees Win 10-3

While Nova pitches great, Alex Rodriguez will prove that even with his injuries and slump during September, he is a still a threat in the postseason, hitting two home runs and leading the Yankees offensive attack on Detroit.

Game 3

3 of 5

    Game 3

    Freddy Garcia vs. Max Scherzer

Unlike Games 1 and 2, the Yankees pitching will not be as effective. But, neither will Detroit's. Both offenses will show up, but the Yankees will once again triumph.

    Prediction: Yankees Win 8-7

Neither Garcia or Scherzer pitch effectively and both are pulled early. Alex Avila homers for the Tigers, leading the way for them. For the Yankees, both Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira homer for the Yanks as Mariano Rivera notches another postseason save.

Game 4

4 of 5

    Game 4

    C.C. Sabathia vs. Justin Verlander

A rematch of Game 1, but with a different outcome. With both pitchers pitching on four days' rest, Sabathia gets the edge. The Yankees force Verlander out of the game early and get to the bullpen. Sabathia goes seven strong innings to give the Yankees the game and the series.

    Prediction: Yankees Win 5-2

The Yankees don't score on Verlander, but do make him work, sending him out of the game in the sixth inning. The Yankees score five runs on the Tigers bullpen, with Robinson Cano leading the way.

Onto the ALCS

5 of 5

The Yankees beat the Tigers 3-1 in the series and go on to face the Rays, who I think will beat the Rangers in their series.

Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez are the heroes of the series, as Sabathia pitches well in both games, and A-Rod drives in five runs and has the two homers in Game 2.
