As the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays usher in the 2011 Major League Baseball playoffs in Arlington, the teams are meeting in the first round for the second-consecutive year.

As the teams took the field to begin the game, this Rays-Rangers battle began to look awfully similar to the 2010 edition. Now that the game has started, the déjà vu factor has continued to go up.

The Rays entered the 2010 playoffs as AL East winners. It took a little help from the Boston Red Sox in the form of a victory over the Yankees, which broke the Rays-Yankees tie in the standings. It took a 162nd game, ninth inning, game tying hit in the form of a two-RBI double by Carlos Pena. It took a winning run in the 12th inning of the final regular season game in the form of a Kelly Shoppach RBI ground ball.

The Rays entered the 2011 playoffs as Wild Card winners. It took a little help from the Boston Red Sox in the form of a loss to the Orioles, which broke the Rays-Red Sox tie in the standings. It took a 162nd game, ninth inning, game tying hit in the form of a solo home run by Dan Johnson. It took a winning run in the 12th inning of the final regular season game in the form of a line drive dinger by Evan Longoria.

The Rangers entered the 2010 playoffs as AL West champions. It didn't take much. The Rangers had clinched in mid-September and finished 10 games ahead of the third place Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

In game one of the 2010 ALDS, the visiting Rangers took a commanding 5-1 lead to defeat the hosting Rays. The road team won all five games during the 2010 ALDS.

In game one of the 2011 ALDS, the visiting Rays took a commanding 9-0 lead to defeat the hosting Rangers.

For the Rays and Rangers, perhaps home field is more of a curse than an advantage.

Talk about déjà vu.
