New Marlins Logo: Ranking the Best and Worst New Logo Rollouts

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

Don't stare at them for too long, or you just might come to like them. They are the new MLB logos, and most of them are utter failures.

This week has been a treat for baseball fans that like to think of themselves as fashion-forward individuals. Seeing how this is a past time of tradition and slow moving entities, there ma ynot be many of you.

The first logo to get leaked was that of the Marlins who will be rebranded as the Miami Marlins next season. ESPN reports that the logo was received as a farce at first, but has since been verified as the real deal.

We then got a first hand look at the Toronto Blue Jays logo which will be pictured after the jump. Before we concluded our thoughts on the Marlins new logo, we had yet another to deride for entirely different reasons.

Here we will break down five of the newer logos to hit Major League Baseball and rank them in order of least awfulness.

As you will see, new does not always mean better. Some of these teams succeeded in rebranding their franchises in the best possible manner.

Then again some missed so horribly, it reminded me of Adam Dunn and his numerous failed at bats. Instead of a list of home run logos, we are about to see a couple of base knocks and some hilarious whiffs.

This is the state of baseball, fans. This is a molasses-paced sport that praises tradition over change. That means any alteration is a big one. Guard your eyes.

5. Miami Marlins

This logo certainly reminds me of Miami—in the 90's.

We have seen many ballclubs use the in-your-face approach before. In fact, the Devil Rays come to mind. The fact is fans want something they can wear without feeling ridiculous.

This logo that was leaked earlier in the week is utter ridiculousness. I can only imagine what the uniforms will look like.

A worthwhile logo should be soothing on the eyes, something the fans can corral around, not run from. The last thing this franchise needed was to scare off the few fans that come to the games.

4. Toronto Blue Jays

This is not terrible. That would be the highest form of praise that I can offer regarding the logo that was leaked but a day after the Miami Marlins' one.

I, in fact, love the Blue Jay. The bird is streamlined and classic. Then the wily Canadians went a little too far in giving him a Maple Leaf in his ear.

It's an awkward stamp that puts the logo into disarray. Is that supposed to be a patriotic earmuff for the mascot? A huge earring? Or worse? Are the Blue Jays actually thinking about the Maple Leafs at all times?

I love patriotism as much as the next guy, but this could have been incorporated far better than this.

3. Arizona Diamondbacks

3 of 6

In 2007, The Arizona Diamondbacks switched from a color scheme best suited for a turquoise jewelry store, and picked a style more in keeping with the sport they play.

I can't stress enough how keeping it simple contributes to 90 percent of a logo's success. The newly-crowned D-Backs kept the same style of their "A" but changed the colors to a two tone fans could rally around.

Gone were the abysmal looking purple and hideous green.

2. San Diego Padres

4 of 6

In 2002, the San Diego Padres took their dated brown nightmare off the club walls and invented a softer, much more cool logo.

This one is far from the best logo out there, but it is a markedly better logo than the one they had for so many years.

The gentle wave within home plate is how you can creatively incorporate the culture of a team without beating fans over the head with it. The Blue Jays could have learned from this one.

1. Tampa Bay Rays

5 of 6

In 2007, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays switched to a much simpler look and dropped the Devil from their moniker.

Some genius finally came to the realization that a devil ray, while I am sure is a very cordial animal, makes a horrible mascot.

The colors went from a spectrum of ugly colors to a simple blue and dark blue. Since that time, the club's fashion and record have been improved.

It's simple. The more comfortable a ballplayer is, the better he plays. Well, they also have a fine farm system too.

Winner: Tampa Bay Rays

6 of 6

The Tampa Bay Rays win this slideshow in a landslide. When you consider that they once had this as a logo, the new one is much more pleasing on the eyes.

In fact, this logo reminds me of something I saw recently. Ah, yes. The new Miami Marlins colors. I now fully expect a much more pleasant logo out of Miami a few years from now.
