Cyrus Gray's Draft Stock Tied to CJ Spiller and Jahvid Best

It is no secret that running backs have seen a drop in their draft stock. More and more teams have decided to employ a two back system, slightly lowering the value of running backs. However, there is still a need for playmakers. This need was likely the reason C.J. Spiller and Jahvid Best were selected early in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Both Spiller and Best were seen has home run hitters with the versatility to contribute in both the running and passing game. While in college, they showed a quick burst and the ability to score from anywhere on the field. However, each had some issues that concerned NFL teams, including durability and the ability to run between the tackles. The early results show they were legitimate concerns, as both players have yet to really impress. Although still early in their careers, the lack of consistent production is sure to impact prospects such as Cyrus Gray of Texas A&M.

Gray exploded onto the scene last year finishing with over 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns. He proved to be a game changer with the burst to go the distance. Gray's ability to keep low and run behind his pads helped him emerge as an all around back. However, there are a lot of similarities between Gray, Spiller, and Best.  They all have a slender build and use their quickness to be effective. Gray has home run ability but may struggle to grind out the tough yards. NFL teams could let the struggles of Spiller and Best impact their evaluation of Gray.

I feel Gray is a very good prospect and the number two rated running back. I love his quickness and play-making ability.  He has all the skills to be a dangerous NFL player and make an early impact. However, I don't expect him to be selected in the top 15 due to the declining stock of running back prospects.
