Chicago Cubs: Top Potential September Call-Ups
The Chicago Cubs season has not gone close to how the team hoped it would. As a result of their struggles, the Cubs September call-ups may get a decent amount of playing time in September.
With the Cubs looking for a new general manager, a strong September performance could put a prospect in a good position to make the Opening Day roster next year.
Chris Carpenter
1 of 5Chris Carpenter has struggled a lot in the minors this year. However, he was one of the Chicago Cubs' top prospects coming into the season. Carpenter has also made a number of relief appearances for the Cubs' bullpen this year.
Originally envisioned to be a starter, it appears that Carpenter's future is in the bullpen. He could find a spot there as early as next season if he can impress both in September and in Spring Training.
Scott Maine
2 of 5Scott Maine is another bullpen arm that could help the Cubs in September. He has had a solid year between Triple-A and the majors.
The Cubs could certainly use some bullpen help for the rest of the season. Their bullpen has thrown the most innings out of any team in the National League and the third most innings out of any bullpen in the MLB.
Wellington Castillo
3 of 5Koyie Hill should not see very many at-bats in September. If the Cubs need someone to start a game in place of Geovany Soto, it should be Wellington Castillo.
Castillo is a power-hitting catcher who could find a permanent spot on the Cubs roster as early as next season. He has had short stints in the majors each of the past two seasons.
D.J. LeMahieu
4 of 5D.J. LeMahieu was given a short opportunity in the majors earlier this season and he struggled this year. Once the calendar turns to September and rosters expand from 25 to 40, LeMahieu should get another shot.
He is a versatile infielder who has experience around the diamond. LeMahieu has the potential to compete with Darwin Barney for the second base job next year. If he loses out, LeMahieu should be a utility man for the Cubs.
Brett Jackson
5 of 5Right now the biggest thing standing between Brett Jackson and a September call-up to the Chicago Cubs is the fact that he is not on their 40-man roster. However, that is a problem that can be remedied very quickly.
Jackson has been outstanding in the minors this year and his play certainly merits a September call-up. This would be his first chance to show what he can do against major league pitching. He could really help his chances of making the team out of Spring Training next year if he has a good September.
