Miami Dolphins: Reviewing Ronnie Brown and the Dolphins' 2005 NFL Draft
The Miami Dolphins are known for their long and successful history that goes back to the 1970s.
In 2005 Nick Saban was entering his first season as the coach. The Miami Dolphins went into the draft with six draft picks.
I will be grading each pick based on the players' overall performance in a Dolphins uniform and their overall NFL performance.
Here are the grades for the 2005 Miami Dolphins draft.
Ronnie Brown: Round 1, Pick 2
1 of 8Years with the Dolphins: Six
Years in the league: Six and active
Stats with the Dolphins: 76 games played, 4,815 rushing yards, 36 rushing touchdowns, 1,491 receiving yards and and two receiving touchdowns
Accomplishments: Pro Bowl selection in 2008
Ronnie Brown played well in his six seasons as a Dolphin, but had battled injury problems majority of the time. He perfected the Wildcat and helped create a offense that became a trend throughout the league. Although Brown could be labeled a disappointment since he was the second overall pick and only managed one season over 1,000 rushing yards and one season with double-digit touchdowns.
Grade with the Dolphins: B-
Overall NFL grade: B-
Matt Roth: Round 2, Pick 46
2 of 8Years with the Dolphins: Four and a half
Years in the league: Six and active
Stats with the Dolphins: 65 games played, 12.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and and 140 tackles
Accomplishments: None
For a second-round pick Roth was a disappointment. He didn't start until his third season in the league when Kevin Carter and David Bowens left the team and even then he didn't do much. He was later released in 2009 due to failed conditioning tests.
Grade with the Dolphins: C
Overall NFL grade: C-
Channing Crowder: Round 3, Pick 70
3 of 8Years with the Dolphins: Six
Years in the league: Six and active
Stats with the Dolphins: 82 games played, 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and and 344 tackles
Accomplishments: None
Crowder was a reliable starter for his six years in a Dolphins uniform. Although he didn't put up impressive stats to back up his value to the team, he was a solid run stopper and had respect in the locker room. The Dolphins surprisingly cut him earlier this season.
Grade with the Dolphins: C
Overall NFL grade: C
Travis Daniels: Round 4, Pick 104
4 of 8Years with the Dolphins: Three
Years in the league: Six and active
Stats with the Dolphins: 44 games played, three interceptions, one fumble recovery and 92 tackles
Accomplishments: None
Daniels didn't do much in his three years as a Dolphin and has done even less with the other teams he has played on. He did have an interception in 2006 that secured a victory against the Tennessee Titans, that was Miami's only victory in eight weeks.
Grade with the Dolphins: D
Overall NFL grade: D-
Anthony Alabi: Round 5, Pick 162
5 of 8Years with the Dolphins: Two
Years in the league: Two
Stats with the Dolphins: 16 games played
Accomplishments: None
Alabi didn't start in any game throughout his two-year career and battled injury issues.
Grade with the Dolphins: F
Overall NFL grade: F
Kevin Vickerson: Round 7, Pick 216
6 of 8Years with the Dolphins: 0
Years in the league: Four and active
Stats with the Dolphins: None
Accomplishments: None
Vickerson looked like he would make the team in 2006 but suffered an ACL injury in a preseason game. After becoming a free agent he went on to play in NFL Europe. He has also played for the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos, totaling 62 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one interception in three seasons.
Grade with the Dolphins: None
Overall NFL grade: D
Overall
7 of 8Ronnie Brown was fun to watch and was a solid running back when he was healthy. Channing Crowder was a fun player to watch as well and also entertaining in the locker room with the reporters. Everybody else was replaceable and didn't contribute much to this team.
Overall grade - C-
