MLB Trades: Who Could Still Move on the Waiver Wire in August?

Kyle VassaloJul 31, 2011

Although the 2011 non-waiver MLB trade deadline is behind us, there are still a lot of moves to be made. Teams like the New York Yankees, who remained quiet through the non-waiver trade deadline, could become major players in August.

The trade deadline has come and gone, but players are still eligible to be dealt if they can clear waivers. Once Aug. 1 hits, teams are going to be looking at picking up the guys who've cleared.

Let's take a look at five guys who might move on the waiver wire in August.

Alfonso Soriano

1 of 5

Alfonso Soriano is going to clear waivers, but will teams be turned off by the price tag? If it comes down to it, they may need to pick up part of his contract in order to make him movable.

The same applies to Carlos Zombrano. They may be inclined to pick up a chunk of the remaining amount due for one, if not both of these players. Both carry big names and will undoubtedly attract suitors.

Wandy Rodriguez

2 of 5

Wandy Rodriguez seemed like a lock, but salary issues may have killed the deal. Maybe this time around, the Astros will be willing to pick up more of the contract in order to make it fly.

Rodriguez was a guy who was almost certainly going to get dealt before the deadline. It's surprising to see him involved in this discussion, but with both teams failing to compromise enough to get a deal done, Rodriguez is still a movable guy.

Aaron Rowand

3 of 5

Aaron Rowand is better than his role in San Francisco suggests; he's currently being used as a rotational outfielder and a pinch-hitter. There are a number of teams that have shown interest in Rowand.

The Giants proved they could win a World Series on the back of their bullpen last year. If they want a chance at repeating, they could stand to upgrade their hitting even more than they already did prior to the non-waiver trade deadline.

Bruce Chen

4 of 5

Bruce Chen isn't an ace by any means. Picking him up won't make or break team, but he could be a valuable guy to insert into the rotation. Teams won't have to pay an arm and a leg obtain Chen's services, and he's going to clear waivers.

He's not a marquee guy, but Chen has a lot of appeal. Carlos Zambrano has similar production and a far more lucrative contract to get around; that makes Chen more movable by a long shot.

Carlos Lee

5 of 5

Carlos Lee is a diamond in the rough in Houston. 2010 is a lost season for the Astros, so they would benefit by cashing in some of their big-name players for prospects to gear up for the bleak-looking future.

It's hard to justify placing Lee in the cleanup role for the money he is making; that would make it tough for a team to come in and pick up his contract. The Astros will likely be enthralled if a team is willing to open their wallets to add another bat to their lineup.
