Philadelphia Eagles Sign Nnamdi Asomugha: Are They Now True Contenders?

Chad LundbergJun 7, 2018

In this author's opinion, the Philadelphia Eagles are now the favorites, behind the world champion Green Bay Packers, to take the top seed in the NFC.

With the trade of Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals in return for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the acquisition of quarterback Vince Young (who's basically a poor man's Michael Vick), the acquisition of defensive end (who is hopefully injury-free) Jason Babin and the signing of the most sought after free agent of the 2011 offseason, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, the Eagles have had arguably the most success of any team this offseason.

With a trio of cornerbacks, Asante Samuel, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and now Nnamdi Asomugha, the Philadelphia Eagles have one of the best secondaries in the NFL. They maybe even look like a complete team. (Casey Matthews is the brother to playmaker Clay Matthews, don't forget. Maybe something will happen there as well.)

At quarterback lies the explosive and reborn Michael Vick, who not only has made plays with his feet his entire career, but has also learned to be a premier and accurate passer. The one concern with Vick is his small frame, which makes him prone to injury. But Vince Young just might be the answer to that little problem.

His receiving corps, which boasts the likes of Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and speedster DeSean Jackson, is arguably the most explosive in the league. They will only get better with experience and added team chemistry. (Hopefully, Jackson will cut short this absurd holdout of his.) Running back LeSean McCoy (averaged 5.2 yards a carry last season) will be entering his third year as a pro.

And to top it off, the Philadelphia Eagles took offensive linemen Danny Watkins in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft, in hopes of reducing a terrible 49 sacks allowed last season.

For Philadelphia Eagles fans, this has to be a day for celebration. However, the long-term prospects of these deals don't necessarily seem great. After all, Michael Vick will be slowing down sooner or later, and Asante Samuel and Nnamdi Asomugha are both thirty years old.

For this season, however, the Philadelphia Eagles have all the potential in the world, and ought to be taken seriously, maybe even as Super Bowl contenders.
