MLB Trade Rumors: 5 Reasons the San Francisco Giants Will Land Ramon Hernandez

Justin WeltonJul 29, 2011

If you think that the San Francisco Giants are done dealing for players, think again. Cincinnati Redsย catcher Ramon Hernandez could follow Carlos Beltranย to the Bay Area.

Ever since Buster Posey went down with an injury earlier in the season, the Giants have been lacking at the catcher position.

Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart have hit .226 and .203, respectively.

An upgrade is imminent and looks like it will happen.

Here are the five reasons the Giants will land Hernandez.

No. 5: Back-to-Back World Series

1 of 5

Not too many times do teams have a chance to be back-to-back World Series champions, but the San Francisco Giants have a great shot at doing just that in 2011.

They added Carlos Beltran but aren't close to being done. The Giants are in search of a catcher after Buster Posey went down earlier in the season.

Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart haven't been able to fill the void with their combined three home runs and 16 RBI.

They are in need of an upgrade, and I don't doubt they go out and go for it once again with the addition of Ramon Hernandez. He is batting .307 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI.

No. 4: This Weekend Is a Great Showcase

2 of 5

The San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds square off for three games this weekend. What a great way to showcase your talents if you are Ramon Hernandez.

This series will show that Giants catchers Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart don't cut it and Hernandez does.

Hernandez has a chance to show the Giants what he can do this weekend.

No. 3: Cincinnati Reds Are Fading

3 of 5

Cincinnati is 6.5 games out of first place in the National League Central after being swept by the New York Mets at home.

The Reds now start a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants. This will be a great showcase for Ramon Hernandez.

The Giants may be one of the hotter teams in the National League, so losing two-of-three is a definite possibility.

No. 2: Ramon Hernandez Helps the Offense Significantly

4 of 5

San Francisco's offense is 27th in runs scored and batting average. Ramon Hernandez is holding a career high .307 batting average.

He has also collected 10 home runs and 27 RBI.

Eli Whiteside is hitting .226 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 53 games played. Chris Stewart is hitting .211 with four RBI in 35 games played.

His offense would be a 100 percent upgrade at the catcher position.

No. 1: San Francisco Needs a Catcher

5 of 5

If the San Francisco Giants want to make another appearance in the World Series they must upgrade at the catcher position.

Ever since Buster Posey went down earlier in the year, the catching position has been lacking.

Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart haven't been able to fill the void so a trade is needed.

Hernandez could provide the power (10 home runs) and average (.307) to give the Giants a much needed spark for the postseason.

He may not be able to come through like Posey, but he gives the Giants a better opportunity to win than Whiteside or Stewart.
