Nnamdi Asomugha: 4 Teams Still in the Running To Sign the Free-Agent CB

Mick AkersJun 3, 2018

As the free-agency frenzy heats up, the most coveted free agent of them all is still on the board and ready to be picked up.

A list that was once around nine or 10 teams has now dwindled down to four teams vying for the cornerback's services.

Here are the four teams left in the running to sign Nnamdi Asomugha in ranking order.

4. Dallas Cowboys

1 of 4

The Dallas Cowboys are the dark horse in the race for Nnamdi Asomugha at this point.

Although the Cowboys made a few notable player cuts, they still don't have too much cap space to work with.

Asomugha is expected to get a deal with anywhere from $12-15 million per season, a price that just may be too steep for mega-spender Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.

Don't count the Cowboys out just yet; if they can get some contracts restructured and wiggle a little more cap room out of their players, then Asomugha could very well end up in the state where everything is bigger—even player contracts.

3. San Francisco 49ers

2 of 4

The San Francisco 49ers would love to keep Nnamdi Asomugha in the Bay Area, as he already has a great fanbase out west.

Asomugha would give the 49ers their defensive star, and help them work themselves back into playoff contention.

Another key reason to keep Asomugha in the Bay is that he could be one of several selling points on the proposed new arena that the Oakland Raiders and the 49ers would share in the Bay Area. Keeping one of the most popular players in the Bay around will help garner fan support of the duel-team arena.

Signing Asomugha would mean more to the 49ers than any other possible suitor for the cornerback on the stadium front alone.

2. New York Jets

3 of 4

The New York Jets have been aggressively going after Nnamdi Asomugha, trying to land a player that could make their already dominate defense that much more dominant.

Adding Asomugha to the mix with the ever-so-talented Derrelle Revis would create a two-headed monster that would outshine the Antonio Cromartie—who is expected to sign elsewhere—and Revis combo of last season.

Revis has been very public about his support of signing Asomugha, and the Jets have been trying everything in their power to reel in Asomugha to the big city.

1. Houston Texans

4 of 4

The Houston Texans are the favorite in the running to land Nnamdi Asomugha, which would bring some major star power to the Lone Star State.

Texans GM Rick Smith is ready to spend, and should be open to breaking the bank to sign Asomugha. Their team has been adding key pieces to the offense throughout the past few seasons, and this could be the topping on the cake for the Texans defensive-wise.

The Texans had the third-best offense in the NFL last season, but their defense was ranked at No. 30 and is largely responsible for the Texans missing out on the playoffs last year.

Landing Asomugha could be the piece that gives their defense the ability to play to the level of the offense, and would make the Texans a dangerous team entering the 2011 season.
