4 Reasons Brett Favre Replacing Kevin Kolb as Backup in Philadelphia Makes Sense

Justin SparksJun 7, 2018

In football, as in life, you must learn to take the good with the bad. Lockout over. Free agency running rampant. Brett Favre.

Now that the Philadelphia Eagles finally traded their former backup quarterback Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for a starting cornerback in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round pick expect Brett Favre chatter to amplify.

The man who has had a career almost the entire length I have been on this earth. Quite frankly, I loved Brett Favre... three or four years ago when he should have retired as a Green Bay Packer and gone into broadcasting and called it a day.

Finally, we mistakenly thought this was it. The man that has dominated our television sets from February to July with: I'm retired, I'm thinking about it, I'm definitely staying retired, I'm contemplating coming back, I'll be there when training camp starts.

To be completely honest, after he left the New York Jets and came out of retirement (for the second? forty-third? time) I started to turn the channel or turn off my television if I heard his voice or saw his face on the screen.

However, now I am sorry to admit that I am a contributing member of the media contingent I became to resent because of their exhausting, non-stop coverage over whether Brett Favre put on Levi jeans or shorts to go to the local store down in the plains of Mississippi, but it must be done. If the Philadelphia Eagles deal Kevin Kolb, which should happen, they will be in the market for a quality backup quarterback.

The rumors of Brett Favre to the Philadelphia Eagles may actually make a whole lot of sense.

For crying out loud the man has an incurable addiction to football. The only thing that satisfies this 41 year old gray-haired man is wearing shoulder pads, putting his hands around some pigskin, and slapping offensive lineman on the rear end as he sprints down the field as if he were 25 years old again. Pretty sick, right?

Not to mention fans who went out and bought their #4 Kevin Kolb jersey can now be cost efficient and put that jersey to use. Slap some tape over Kolb, break out your heavy duty sharpie, and write Favre across the back and you just got yourselves a new Brett Favre jersey on the cheap.

Okay, jokes aside, in honor of welcoming Brett Favre back to the speculation radar here are four reasons this whole backup quarterback thing could be a match made in heaven for both sides.

Follow me on twitter for up to date Philadelphia Eagles rumors, trades, and news.

1. Michael Vick

1 of 4

This should come as no surprise to any Philadelphia Eagles fan: Michael Vick tends to get hurt from time to time. Last year Kevin Kolb came in and started five games for the often injured Vick.

High risk, high reward is the name of the game with Michael Vick. Brett Favre would be the perfect backup. He knows the west coast offense like the back of his hand. After all, he has been running the same offense for a decade before Michael Vick became Michael Vick.

Brett Favre would not need to do much in the preparation area if he had to fill in for the mobile starting quarterback. Throw some rinky-dink screens in the flats, throw a couple curl routes, and air it out as far as possible for Desean Jackson to run under. Pretty good gig huh?

Even Michael Vick tweeted his reception to the idea of having the future hall-of-famer as his back up:

"

"I would be honored to have Brett Favre as a backup. That will be amazing Learning how to toy with defenses the way he did his whole career"

"

Just imagine, Michael Vick adding to his already large bag of tricks on how to toy with defenses. Salivating stuff.

2. Andy Reid

2 of 4

Andy Reid and Brett Favre go way, way back. Back when Andy Reid did not know what a cheese steak was and before he tried to set the new fashion standard in Philadelphia by wearing Hawaiian shirts or starting press conferences with "times yours." (Which after four months, is a welcomed thing to hear this week)

Andy Reid had been hired on by Mike Holmgren in 1992 to be the Green Bay Packers offensive assistant coach. That same year the Green Bay Packers brought in a young quarterback in a trade from the Atlanta Falcons.

This was the beginning of a great run of success and the foundation of Andy Reid's quarterback molding reputation. Brett Favre made Brett Favre who he is, but Andy Reid certainly had a big part in shaping the play of the future hall-of-famer.

The two enjoyed a ton of success in Green Bay winning two consecutive Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997. If Brett Favre came in under Andy Reid he would certainly abide by what plans "Big Red' has laid out for him.

You can certainly assume Andy Reid has bigger plans for Favre than just holding a clip board and sporting a fresh visor week to week. More on that in the next two slides.

3. Marty Mornhinweg

3 of 4

Marty Mornhinweg, like Andy Reid, has an extensive history working with Brett Favre. The offensive coordinator that has set franchise scoring records for the Philadelphia Eagles in each of the last three years, could use some objective assistance in the film room and on the practice field.

Listen, Brett Favre makes sense just as much sense for what he can bring on the field to the Eagles as for what he can bring off the field to the Eagles. Father time has a wealth of knowledge and has succeeded in a league that has made remarkable changes in styles of play every few years.

Mornhinweg worked with Favre back in Green Bay during the same time Andy Reid was in "titletown" when they made the great Super Bowl run of the mid 1990's.

Side note here, Mike Holmgren had one remarkable coaching staff in Green Bay back in those days, did he not? His tree of coaching discipleship is pretty remarkable.

Brett Favre essentially gives Marty Mornhinweg a new assistant coach who can help with creating plays, instructing receivers and running backs, and helping groom the other quarterbacks while also providing a reliable backup who can absorb the extensive offensive playbook if (and when) needed.

4. Mike Kafka

4 of 4

Mike Kafka will be the next Kevin Kolb, mark my words. The best teams in the NFL know how to sift through all the quarterbacks available and choose the one that fits their organizations. Other teams prefer to draft guys with raw talent and groom them for a few years under their coaches' tutelage.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the latter. They did the exact same thing they are doing with Kafka as they with Kolb before. They drafted him a few years before they had a need, got him acclimated and well-versed within the offense and groomed his skill sets to fit their specific needs.

Andy Reid lucked out with the pick up of Michael Vick and his resurgence as a prolific talent in the NFL. He also had a year to groom Vick during the 2009 season. They changed his throwing mechanics and his footwork and taught him how to go through his reads.

Vick still needs to work on the last part, but compared to when he was in Atlanta, it's a vast improvement.

Kafka is a smart kid, has a good arm and fits the bill for a starting quarterback in the physicality department.

Having arguably the best quarterback coaching tandem in the league with Reid and Marty Mornhinweg (just look at quarterback statistics for guys after they leave Philadelphia), the most athletic and explosive quarterback in the league in Vick and now the possibility of the NFL's all-time iron man quarterback in Brett Favre to learn from? The Northwestern grad will be so academically stimulated in the science of quarterbacking over the next couple years, he should be given an honorary doctorate degree.

The Philadelphia Eagles seem to really like Kafka even after just one year. Bringing Favre into the fold could really accelerate the kid's learning curve.
