Latest Update on Kyle Orton: It's All Rumors!

Michael Heck Jun 7, 2018

As rumors fly faster than Brett Farve retirement and unretirement announcements, the Miami Dolphins are still in the running for the services of Drew Brees...oh...wait! Hmmm...oh yeah I meant Kyle Orton.Ā

The latest update is that Kyle Orton has been attending all of the meetings at the Denver Broncos complex. There doesn't seem to be a trade imminent at this point. So those fans still holding out hope that this trade will fall through still have a chance. I've been crossing my fingers that Miami will realize that trading a defensive lineman (or linebacker) and a future draft pick is not a great investment.

Although I've been vocal that Channing Crowder should be traded, I never imagined that he could (or might) be swapped for Kyle Orton. Don't get me wrong, he's a great option for a starting quarterback. But what the Dolphins would need to sacrifice is not worth it. The Miami Dolphins front office doesn't need to trade picks, they need to stockpile them.Ā

Meanwhile, Jeff Ireland is attempting to keep the Miami Dolphins signings an incredible secret. Meanwhile, Marion Barber could be a Miami Dolphin...oh, brother.Ā

I don't like rumors but I love that Tony McDaniels has decided to stay. Which means that we could see one of the other defensive lineman on his way out, like Phillip Merling. Would you trade a third round pick and Phillip Merling for Kyle Orton? I can tell you that the third round pick will escalate to a second round pick if Kyle Orton performs well. I guess we have to decide how "well" is defined.

This just doesn't sit well with me. It would be like trading for Tavaris Jackson, gulp! At least Seattle got their backup/starter without a trade. I like Kyle Orton, but not for a second or third round pick.Ā

I believe today is the day the Jeff Ireland shows his cards. There is a clamoring that Kyle Orton to Miami is not in the cards as much as everyone thought it might be. Denver might be, and should be, getting cold feet. Considering that Tim Tebow would be their guy, the coaching staff should be experiencing a hesitation. Why are they in such a rush to trade Kyle Orton? Let Tebow and Orton duel it out on the field and then design a trade.Ā

As fans, we should be tired of the Miami Dolphins attempting to play it safe at quarterback. It seems like that's exactly what Jeff Ireland is trying to do by going after Orton.
