Kansas City Chiefs: Top 10 Free Agent Targets
With just two days remaining from the start of free agency, it's time to look at each team's top targets heading into this weekend.
The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of a surprising 10-6 season, which saw them win their first division title since 2003.
Although KC had a stellar running game and a solid secondary, they lacked at the wide receiver, defensive tackle and some offensive line positions.
They hope to shore up some of these spots via free agency, which begins this Friday.
Here are the Chiefs' top 10 free agent targets for 2011.
10. LT Jared Gaither
1 of 102010 Team: Baltimore Ravens
The former supplemental draft pick is one of the biggest offensive lineman in the league, standing at 6'9" and 340 lbs.
He could come in and immediately challenge current starting left tackle Branden Albert for the position this season.
I realize that the big LT has had some injury/attitude issues in the past, but I think a change of scenery would really do wonders for this guy.
9. LT Jermon Bushrod
2 of 102010 Team: New Orleans Saints
Bushrod has protected Saint' star QB Drew Brees blind side for two full seasons now.
The Towson University product took over for then-starter Jammal Brown in 2009, and is excellent in all-around pass-blocking.
If the Chiefs sign him, he would help solidify KC's left side of their offensive line for years to come.
8. RT Tyson Clabo
3 of 102010 Team: Atlanta Falcons
The 29-year-old Clabo made his first Pro Bowl last season after an outstanding season at his right tackle position.
Looking at the Chiefs current offensive line, the RT spot is arguably the weakest part of the group.
Nabbing Clabo would immediate make the Chiefs line better, and put inconsistent starter Barry Richardson on the bench for good.
7. DT Brandon Mebane
4 of 102010 Team: Seattle Seahawks
Mebane has been a solid run-stopper in the middle of the Seahawks defensive line over the past four seasons.
With the Chiefs possibly looking at a rookie starting at DT this season, adding a veteran like Mebane would only help improve the competition level at that position.
He is just one of several run-stuffing defensive tackles that could be had by KC when free agency begins this Friday.
6. WR Steve Smith
5 of 102010 Team: New York Giants
The speedy Smith has been a fixture in the Giants offense over the past three seasons.
Although he regressed some in 2010, he is still a big play wideout that should receive some attention when the free agency period begins.
KC needs another dynamic receiver to improve their passing offense, and Smith could easily be that guy.
5. WR Lance Moore
6 of 102010 Team: New Orleans Saints
Moore is one of the most underrated players in all of football.
He has scored 20 touchdowns combined over the last three seasons, and is known to be a very sure-handed wide receiver.
Moore has a chance to be very productive in the Chiefs' offensive system, if they are able to sign the long time Saint in free agency this year.
4. RT Sean Locklear
7 of 102010 Team: Seattle Seahawks
The veteran tackle would help shore up a position of need for the Chiefs.
He has been a solid RT in his time with the Seahawks, and is an immediate upgrade over any right tackles that KC currently possesses right now.
With not many good right tackles available in this year's free agent class, Kansas City should pursue Locklear pretty hard.
3. LT Matt Light
8 of 102010 Team: New England Patriots
Matt Light is a proven winner, and has shown that he can still get the job done even at age 33 years old.
He has been named to three different Pro Bowls from his left tackle position, and has been one of the staples of the Patriots offensive line over the past several seasons.
He has obvious connections to current Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, and KC might pull the trigger on Light for the right price.
2. WR Steve Breaston
9 of 102010 Team: Arizona Cardinals
Former Cardinals slot receiver Steve Breaston appears to make the most since as a free agent target for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2011.
He used to play under current Chiefs head coach Todd Haley, and KC is in desperate need of a dependable guy to play the slot on offense for the upcoming season and beyond.
Breaston has had some injury problems throughout his career, but he is almost a lock to get 700-800 receiving yards for the Chiefs this season if they are able to land him.
1. DT Aubrayo Franklin
10 of 102010 Team: San Francisco 49ers
There has been much talk about the Chiefs' interests in veteran defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin.
Although he is 30 years old, he is the ideal DT to plug right in the middle of KC's defensive line, and would really make the entire Chiefs' front seven better because of his presence alone.
He will be a challenge to sign though, as many teams have already expressed interested in him.
