2011 NFL Free Agency Rumors: 5 Best Teams for Nnamdi Asomugha to Sign With

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Former Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is the NFL's most coveted free agent of the summer, and now that the players and league owners have completed a new collective bargaining agreement to end the lockout, Asomugha can begin talks with teams as a free agent tomorrow.

In his eight year career, all with the Raiders, Asomugha has racked up 11 interceptions. While that may not seem like a large number for an eight year career, the amount of times Asomugha is thrown at must be taken into account.

Teams have figured out that throwing to the receiver who Asomugha is covering is such a bad idea that through the first seven games of 2008, no team threw at him more than twice in a game.

So with his unbelievable ability to be a shutdown corner, which teams are the most likely to sign him?

Is it an up and coming team who desperately needs help in the secondary like the Houston Texans or Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or a serious contender looking for the final piece in their championship puzzle like the Baltimore Ravens?

Let's find out.

New York Giants

1 of 5

Nnamdi Asomugha could come to the New York Giants for a few reasons. For one, he has a sibling in the tri-state area, and second, he will be in the spotlight next to New York Jets all-pro cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Some experts, scouts and fans consider Asomugha to be a better corner than Revis, and playing under the bright lights of New York would allow him to showcase his talents to a greater audience than when he played in Oakland.

The Giants definitely could use another solid corner alongside Corey Webster (pictured), and in a division with solid receivers, such as the Philadelphia Eagles' Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson, Asomugha would be a fit for the Giants.

New York was tied for 14th in the NFL in interceptions, and 17th in points allowed per game.

If the asking price for Asomugha is too high, the Giants would likely feel content with developing several of their young corners.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2 of 5

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers surprised many last season by contending for a playoff spot, and almost won the NFC South division.

The Bucs' roster is filled with talent, led by a young and passionate coach in Raheem Morris.

Adding a tremendous player like Nnamdi Asomugha who can take away elite receivers for an entire game would give the Tampa defense another dimension.

With young corner Aqib Talib and Asomugha in the secondary, the Bucs could have one of the best cornerback tandems in football.

The Tampa Bay ownership isn't one with a history of spending big money on free agents, but adding a player like Asomugha may be the piece to get the franchise to the next level and into postseason play this year.

Last season, Tampa Bay was ninth in points allowed per game and tied for eighth in interceptions.

Houston Texans

3 of 5

In every season since the franchise came into the league in 2006, the Houston Texans have missed the playoffs.

After finishing 9-7 in 2009 and barely missing the playoffs, expectations in 2010 were to make the playoffs and possibly win the division.

After a disappointing season in which they finished 6-10 and missed the playoffs, the Texans would love to sign Nnamdi Asomugha to help correct their major defensive weaknesses from 2010.

The Texans were 23rd in the league in points allowed per game last season, giving up nearly 27 points a contest.

They also allowed the most passing yards per game last season, giving up 270 yards through the air per game.

With an offense that scores points as well as anyone, the Texans must add defensive star power to be a complete team and a real playoff contender, and signing Asomugha would be a great first step.

Baltimore Ravens

4 of 5

The Baltimore Ravens have been one of the best defensive teams in football for over a decade, and signing Nnamdi Asomugha may give them a defense good enough to carry an average offense to a Super Bowl, which is the route they took to the Super Bowl XXXV title.

The Ravens would be smart to add some depth at the cornerback position this offseason, and adding Asomugha with Ed Reed and Dominique Foxworth in the secondary would be a scary thought for opposing offenses.

Baltimore is a Super Bowl contender right now, and adding Asomugha would make them a favorite in the AFC and show their fans they are serious about returning to the Super Bowl after coming up just short the past few seasons.

Atlanta Falcons

5 of 5

The Atlanta Falcons had the best record in the NFC last season at 13-3, but were completely dismantled in the divisional playoffs by the eventual champions, the Green Bay Packers.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers made the Falcons secondary look terrible in the 48-21 beatdown.

The Falcons desperately need a cornerback who can shut down top receivers.

In a division in which the Falcons have to compete with quality teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints, there is little room for error.

The Falcons were 11th in passing yards allowed per game at 226.1 per contest, and allowed the fourth highest opponents' completion percentage, with opposing quarterbacks completing 65 percent of their passes.

Signing Nnamdi Asomugha would give the Falcons an elite corner who can take great receivers out of the game and help the franchise take the next step as a perennial playoff team.

With an improved defense, the Falcons should make the NFC Championship game next year.
