MLB Trade Rumors: Why the Boston Red Sox Don't Need Carlos Beltran from NY Mets

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

The Boston Red Sox needed a right handed bat earlier in the season with the thought of having too many left handed batters in the lineup. This minor dilemma was creating a concern for the playoffs, but with the emergence of young right fielder Josh Reddick as a dependable hitter, the Sox do not have to pursue New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran.

The dilemma for the Red Sox is can Reddick keep up his amazing season for another three months through the playoffs, or should they acquire the proven postseason talent of Beltran before the July 31 trade deadline?

Coming into this past weekend versus the Seattle Mariners, Reddick was hitting .378 in 29 games this season. His play has been consistent enough to replace often injured J.D. Drew in right field.

Even if Reddick were to cool down, which he will likely do, the Red Sox lineup is in good enough shape that they don't need another bat.

The Red Sox are scoring over five runs per game this season, which is 25 percent higher than the rest of the American League.

Adrian Gonzalez (.346 avg, 17 HR, 83 RBI) and Jacoby Ellsbury (.320 avg, 16 HR, 28 SB) are having MVP seasons, and Ellsbury is on pace to set a career high in home runs.

Top to bottom, the Red Sox lineup is so dangerous to opposing pitchers. It may be the best Red Sox offense of all time, even better than the 2003-04 teams.

Beltran is a solid player both offensively and defensively, and taking him away from going to other World Series hopefuls such as the Philadelphia Phillies may be a reason in itself to acquire the Mets star.

While the asking price is high, it likely isn't too astronomical for the Red Sox not to make a serious offer for Beltran.

But with general manager Theo Epstein letting go of multiple top prospects last offseason to acquire Adrian Gonazlez from the San Diego Padres, rebuilding the farm system is a better idea than giving what's left of it for Beltran.

The Red Sox have enough offense to win games, and can easily make up for a bad pitching performance by scoring 10 plus runs on any team.

If anything, the Red Sox could use another starter to add depth to the rotation. With staff ace Jon Lester expected to return from injury very soon, and Clay Buchholz likely out a bit longer with back issues, adding a starter before the trade deadline is the best move for Boston to make.

You can never have enough pitching, and with combination of Lester and Buchholz's health issues, Josh Beckett's history of injuries, and John Lackey's many unimpressive performances, the Sox should at least acquire a veteran starter for the remainder of the season.

The offensive skills of Beltran are impressive, and would surely make the Red Sox an even better hitting team, but with Reddick playing so well, and multiple starting pitchers having health concerns, trading for pitching and not Beltran is the best plan of attack for the Red Sox this week.
