MLB Trade Rumors: Updating All 30 Teams' Latest Trade News
Major League Baseball's July 31 trade deadline is less than a week away, yet there has been little to no official action taken by the league's contenders so far. This means that, as general managers continue to plot potential deals for their players, trade activity will likely pick up for the rest of the week.
This week, the futures of some of baseball's top players such as Carlos Beltran, Hunter Pence and others will play out right in front of us. That being said, here are the latest reports of activity for each of baseball's 30 teams.
Los Angeles Dodgers
1 of 30It's looking as though the Los Angeles Dodgers are going to be sellers at the deadline, as interest in starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and shortstop Jamey Carroll is heating up.
At last report, the Boston Red Sox were keeping tabs on Kuroda as a possible addition to their starting five. Although Kuroda is 6-12 with a 3.19 ERA on the year, he has always been a solid starting pitcher and would make for a nice addition to any club's starting rotation.
Jamey Carroll has logged time at nearly every position this year for the Dodgers, which makes him a viable trade candidate for nearly every contender seeking to bolster their bench. At last report, teams looking for a little depth at short include the Rays, Reds, Pirates, Brewers and Giants.
San Francisco Giants
2 of 30Late Saturday night, Newsday's David Lennon tweeted that there was "increasing chatter around [the] Mets" suggesting that Beltran will be dealt to the Giants. The Mets have reportedly shown interest in Giants prospects Gary Brown and Zach Wheeler, as well as Brandon Belt.
In addition to trying to acquire Beltran, a report came out on July 19 that the team was also open to acquiring Minnesota Twins All-Star Michael Cuddyer. The report says, upon acquiring Cuddyer, the Giants would place him at second base, a position Cuddyer has played 13 times this season.
Finally, a report on CBSSports.com surfaced late Sunday night that suggested the Giants may be turning their eyes to Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton because of hesitation to trade top pitching prospect Zach Wheeler.
San Diego Padres
3 of 30It wouldn't be the trade deadline if someone wasn't talking about San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell, whose name is thrown around in possible deals almost every year at this time.
Early Sunday morning, a report from Delaware Online surfaced, saying that Bell would be open to serving as a setup man for the Philadelphia Phillies for the rest of this season, as long as he could return to the closer's role in 2012. The Phillies bullpen has struggled mightily this year, so the addition of Bell could further bolster their pitching staff and improve their bullpen.
It's also been reported that the Padres told reliever Mike Adams that he was staying put, this coming after his name had been thrown around in potential trade talks last week.
Arizona Diamondbacks
4 of 30The Arizona Diamondbacks are in the market for a reliever or two, and they have shown interest in the Toronto Blue Jays' Jason Frasor, Kansas City Royals' Joakim Soria and New York Mets' Jason Isringhausen.
Although the team's bullpen currently includes potential closers David Hernandez and J.J. Putz, the team is still expected to bring in some late-innings help because of the inconsistencies of their current relievers.
Colorado Rockies
5 of 30Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports that both the Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates have been in talks with the Rockies about acquiring catcher Chris Iannetta. Both teams could use another bat in their starting nine, and Iannetta, who is batting .222 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI, could make for a nice acquisition for either team.
The Denver Post also reports that the team is continuing to play struggling third baseman Ian Stewart so that scouts from opposing teams can watch him play.
Finally, although there have been reports that the Rockies could possibly ship starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez out of Colorado, Jon Heyman reports teams are convinced Jimenez is only a Justin Upton-like "trial balloon." That, in addition to the fact that bench player Jason Giambi wants to remain a Rockie, likely means two of the team's best players are likely to stay put.
Atlanta Braves
6 of 30Like the San Francisco Giants, the Atlanta Braves are also in the thick of things in regards to the Carlos Beltran trade talks. That being said, it has been reported that the Mets want one of the Braves' young pitching prospects, whether it be Mike Minor, Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado or Arodys Vizcaino, and general manager Frank Wren has previously stated he will not part with any of the four.
Although many analysts have said the Braves were actively seeking to acquire another power bat, possibly Jonny Gomes, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal is reporting that, with Dan Uggla and Jason Heyward heating up, the Braves may not need to go after an expensive power hitter. He suggests the team will add a consistent right-handed bat, but not a power hitter, because production from the two Braves is the equivalent of adding a power bat.
The Braves are also in the market for a right-handed reliever to help ease the workload of Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel.
Philadelphia Phillies
7 of 30The Philadelphia Phillies have also inquired about adding Carlos Beltran to their first-place team, but the Mets want Domonic Brown in return. ESPN reporter Buster Olney says completion of the deal is "highly doubtful," however, because of the way the Phillies feel about Brown's future.
Washington Nationals
8 of 30On Sunday, Yahoo's Jeff Passan tweeted that the Washington Nationals were actively shopping shortstop Ian Desmond to both the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox, despite reports that surfaced earlier in the week saying that Desmond wasn't going anywhere.
The Nationals are also reportedly interested in acquiring Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton. Upton is a childhood friend of Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, which adds to the speculation that he may end up in Washington by July 31.
In terms of selling, the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have all shown at least some interest in acquiring Nationals setup man Tyler Clippard.
Florida Marlins
9 of 30In a recent interview with the Miami Herald, Florida Marlins manager Jack McKeon said he doesn't expect anyone to be traded by the trade deadline, but that doesn't mean the Fish won't make at least a small move by July 31.
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick tweeted that the Marlins may send Leo Nunez to the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies in return for some starting pitching, which the Phillies have plenty of. Also, a report on MLB.com said Marlins were interested in acquiring Brandon Inge from the Detroit Tigers. Inge was recently designated for assignment after the Tigers acquired Wilson Betemit on Saturday.
New York Mets
10 of 30The New York Daily News' Andy Martino recently tweeted that the New York Mets, despite receiving at least some interest in Angel Pagan, are likely to only move outfielder Carlos Beltran by July 31. That being said, Martino also tweeted that the team hopes to move Beltran before this weekend, meaning the former All-Star will likely be on the move within the next few days.
As previously mentioned in this slideshow, the Mets are hoping to receive either Domonic Brown from the Phillies, Mike Minor from the Braves or Brandon Belt and Zach Wheeler from the San Francisco Giants in return for Beltran.
Houston Astros
11 of 30The Houston Astros are definitely sellers with the July 31 trade deadline looming.
The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly shown interest in outfielder Hunter Pence, although an article on CSNPhilly.com suggests that the Astros' asking price is too high. The Phillies would likely have to send Domonic Brown to Houston in order to acquire Pence.
FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi is also reporting that the Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks have been in talks about Wandy Rodriguez, who is possibly the best starting pitcher available on the market.
Finally, the Boston Globe is reporting that the Astros have received very little interest in starting pitcher Brett Myers.
Milwaukee Brewers
12 of 30After Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez broke his left clavicle last week, the team's general manager told a Milwaukee-area reporter that he would "possibly" be looking into acquiring an outfielder by the deadline.
Cincinnati Reds
13 of 30The Cincinnati Reds have made headlines this week after saying they will not trade highly touted catching prospect Devin Mesoraco.
That being said, the team is still looking to add a player or two at the deadline. A tweet from FOXSports.com reporter Jon Paul Morosi surfaced last week saying that the team was actively scouting Seattle Mariners pitchers Jason Vargas and Doug Fister. At the same time, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick tweeted that the Reds "have nibbled" about Carlos Beltran.
St. Louis Cardinals
14 of 30Although the St. Louis Cardinals have publicly stated that they do not intend on trading outfielder Colby Rasmus, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports that talks between the Cards and Chicago White Sox about Rasmus have "accelerated" in recent days. According to Strauss, the Cardinals are interested in White Sox pitchers Edwin Jackson and Matt Thornton in return for Rasmus.
FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi also reported that the Cardinals were interested in acquiring Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. Morosi reports that the Cardinals are in the market for another starting pitcher so that they can move Kyle McClellan back to the bullpen.
Chicago Cubs
15 of 30Although many analysts have pegged the Chicago Cubs as sellers, it is beginning to look like the Cubs are content with their lineup and may deal only one, if any, of their starting nine.
CSNChicago.com's Patrick Mooney reports that third baseman Aramis Ramirez and first baseman Carlos Pena may have played their way into the Cubs' plans for next season after strong posting strong offensive numbers in recent weeks. SI's Jon Heyman tweeted that the Cubs are also telling teams that Sean Marshall isn't going anywhere.
That being said, ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine reported that at least four teams, including the Cleveland Indians, were interested in acquiring Cubs outfielder Kosuke Fukudome.
Pittsburgh Pirates
16 of 30It seems that the Pittsburgh Pirates are most interested in acquiring help for their bullpen, as Fox Sports' Jon Paul Morosi tweeted that the club was actively looking at the Toronto Blue Jays' Jason Frasor and Octavio Dotel, as well as the Baltimore Orioles' Koji Uehara.
The team is also in the market for a bat, and, like nearly every other team in the National League, reportedly checked in on New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran. The team has also spoken internally about acquiring Oakland Athletics outfielder David DeJesus, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, and also Colorado Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta, according to Morosi.
New York Yankees
17 of 30At this time last year, the New York Yankees acquired Lance Berkman, Kerry Wood and Austin Kearnsโplayers that were dumped by their respective teams who were trying to free up payroll. Although the Yankees' starting nine is likely to remain the same, the team is looking for some depth in the bullpen and possibly their starting rotation.
In regards to the bullpen, the Yankees have showed at least some interest in Washington Nationals setup man Tyler Clippard. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal also reports that the Yankees are among the teams pursuing Los Angeles Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda, while Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Yankees sent a scout to Cleveland to watch Chicago White Sox starter Edwin Jackson pitch.
Baltimore Orioles
18 of 30The Baltimore Orioles are currently listening to offers from four teamsโthe Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twinsโfor reliever Koji Uehara, according to Baltimore Sun reporter Jeff Zrebiec.
Zrebiec also reports that the Orioles have softened their stance on starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. The team is currently listening to offers from a number of teams, but asking for an MLB-ready starting pitcher in return for Guthrie's services.
Also, at this time, there has been very little chatter among teams about acquiring Orioles designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero and first baseman Derek Lee.
Toronto Blue Jays
19 of 30The Toronto Blue Jays are currently listening to offers for the services of reliever Jason Frasor from both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks. Frasor is 2-1 this season and currently has a 2.98 ERA.
In terms of buying, the Blue Jays have shown at least some interest in San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell, as well as setup man Mike Adams, according to cbcsports.ca. The team has also been scouting Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Kevin Slowey, of whom they've reportedly been interested in since spring training.
Boston Red Sox
20 of 30Last Saturday, the Boston Globe's Mike Silverman tweeted that the Boston Red Sox had no trades on the near horizon and that there was "nothing likely" on the trade front.
That being said, the team has shown at least some interest in acquiring Washington Nationals setup man Tyler Clippard, according to various reports. The Red Sox have also spoken to the Nationals about shortstop Ian Desmond, although his availability is questionable.
Tampa Bay Rays
21 of 30The Tampa Bay Rays are willing to part ways with closer Kyle Farnsworth, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. Farnsworth is having a stellar year with the Rays, as he currently has a 3-1 record and 1.99 ERA. Through 40.2 innings pitched this season, Farnsworth has only walked eight batters and struck out 32.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal also reports that league-wide talks about Rays outfielder B.J. Upton have picked up, as the San Francisco Giants have shown the most interest in the 27-year-old outfielder.
The Rays have also started to tell teams that they will not be trading starter James Shields.
Oakland Athletics
22 of 30Although no one has reportedly called the Oakland Athletics to inquire about Hideki Matsui and the team has told other organizations that they will not trade reliever Grant Balfour, the A's are still expected to be sellers at the deadline.
ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Boston Red Sox have spoken with the Athletics about a possible deal involving Rich Harden. The Red Sox have also talked with the A's about a separate deal involving lefty Craig Breslow.
Finally, ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates have spoken internally about possibly acquiring outfielder David DeJesus.
Los Angeles Angels
23 of 30Los Angeles Times reporter Kevin Baxter recently wrote that the Angels "have clear needs but don't appear to have the means to address them," meaning fans should expect the team to remain relatively quiet with the July 31 trade deadline rapidly approaching. That being said, Baxter does say that the team is looking to bolster its bullpen, and have reportedly reached out to the San Diego Padres about both Heath Bell and Mike Adams.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal also reports that the Angels are interested in Chicago Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who has gone on the record about his unwillingness to waive his no-trade clause should the Cubs try and move him.
As of now, it looks as those the Angels will remain silent.
Seattle Mariners
24 of 30Fox Sports' Jon Paul Morosi suggests that the Seattle Mariners may move some of their pitchers in order to acquire a bat by the July 31 trade deadline. Currently, numerous teams are reportedly interested in Mariners pitchers Jason Vargas and Doug Fister.
Morosi also writes that the only Mariners who are "off limits" are Felix Hernandez, Michael Pineda and Dustin Ackley. The team could possibly move Jack Wilson, Adam Kennedy and Jamey Wright, in addition to both Vargas and Fister.
Currently, talks surrounding starter Erik Bedard have slowed due to his untimely injury earlier this month, but that doesn't mean he won't be moved by the deadline.
Texas Rangers
25 of 30The Texas Rangers are likely buyers at the trade deadline, also SI's Jon Heyman recently tweeted that a weak left-handed relievers market could cause the team to deal reliever Arthur Rhodes in the coming days.
The Rangers have reportedly spoken with the Baltimore Orioles about acquiring reliever Koji Uehara, as well as the Washington Nationals about a deal involving setup man Tyler Clippard, according to this report. Yahoo's Jeff Passan recently tweeted that, although the San Francisco Giants are still the favorites to acquire New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran, the Rangers were "coming hard."
Cleveland Indians
26 of 30For the past few weeks, baseball analysts have speculated that the Cleveland Indians were most interested in acquiring starting pitching, specially either Aaron Harang or Hiroki Kuroda. Although nothing major has developed as of yet, the Indians have been in talks with both players' respective teams.
That being said, the Indians are reportedly making very little headway in talks with the San Diego Padres about acquiring outfielder Ryan Ludwick. SI's Jon Heyman reports that the Indians are also interested in acquiring outfielder Coco Crisp.
Finally, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal is also reporting that the Indians have joined what seems like the rest of baseball in talking with the Tampa Bay Rays about B.J. Upton.
Detroit Tigers
27 of 30The first-place Detroit Tigers are looking to bolster their pitching staff, as various reports have noted that the team was involved in talks with the Baltimore Orioles about reliever Koji Uehara. SI's Jon Heyman also tweeted that the Tigers had scouted Colorado Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez's last start, while FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi wrote that the Tigers were interested in Orioles starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie as well.
In terms of selling, the only player that is getting a lot of chatter right now is Brandon Inge, who the Tigers recently designated for assignment after acquiring Wilson Betemit.
Kansas City Royals
28 of 30The Kansas City Royals are expected to be sellers at the deadline, although some reports recently surfaced saying that the team was exploring acquiring Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton in an attempt to better contend in the division next season.
As of late, the Royals have been fielding offers from many teams, including the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, about outfielders Jeff Francoeur and Melky Cabrera. The team has also reportedly spoken to the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks about a trade that would involve closer Joakim Soria.
Chicago White Sox
29 of 30The New York Yankees reportedly sent a scout to Cleveland to watch Chicago White Sox starter Edwin Jackson's last start, which led to further speculation that Jackson, whose name has been thrown in many possible trades, will be shipped out of Chicago.
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the White Sox are interested in St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Colby Rasmus. In return for Rasmus, Strauss speculates that the Cardinals would ask for either Matt Thornton or Jackson, among other players.
The White Sox have also had talks with the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves about Carlos Quentin, but no major developments have come in recent days.
Minnesota Twins
30 of 30It's been tough to tell if the Minnesota Twins are buyers or sellers at this year's trade deadline. The team currently sits seven games below .500, yet are still in striking distance of the first-place Detroit Tigers.
There has been speculation that the Twins may ship All-Star Michael Cuddyer out of Minnesota, as the San Francisco Giants reportedly remain very intrigued by his availability. That being said, many reports have stated that Cuddyer wishes to remain in Minnesota and the Twins would love to keep him. Also, the Twins have spoken with the Toronto Blue Jays about a possible deal involving starter Kevin Slowey, according to a tweet from Fox Sports' Jon Paul Morosi.
In terms of buying, the Twins are reportedly one of four teams who have spoken to the Baltimore Orioles about reliever Koji Uehara.
