NFL Trade Speculation: 21 Players Who Could Be Dealt During Training Camp

Bryn SwartzJun 7, 2018

With the NFL lockout FINALLY almost over, free agency and training camp will finally be able to begin.

Along with free agency will include a slew of trades throughout the league.

In fact, the following slides highlight 21 players, in no particular order, who could potentially be traded during training camp.

Steve Smith, Wide Receiver, Carolina Panthers

1 of 21

Steve Smith, 32, is no longer one of the most productive wide receivers in the National Football League. He isn't going to want to spend the 2011 season catching passes from rookie Cam Newton.Ā

Smith has had trouble with his teammates in the past. He could possibly be traded for a second- or third-round pick once the lockout has ended.Ā

Brandon Jacobs, Running Back, New York Giants

2 of 21

Jacobs had an issue last season in which he threw his helmet in the stands in anger and was fined $10,000.

He also carried just 142 times and is losing carries to Ahmad Bradshaw. He could be traded to a place where he would be the featured running back.Ā

Kevin Kolb, Quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles

3 of 21

Even if I'm wrong, he's going to play somewhere else next season, whether it be Arizona, Seattle, Miami, or another team. And he will probably be traded for a player instead of draft picks.Ā

2025 Draft Picks Ready For Leap 🐸

Donovan McNabb, Quarterback, Washington Redskins

4 of 21

It's pretty obvious that Donovan McNabb is not going to play for the Washington Redskins in 2011. He had a poor year in 2010 and had a feud (not really his fault though) with head coach Mike Shanahan.Ā

Even though it won't be for much, he will be traded before the 2011 season. It just may only be for a fourth- or fifth-round draft pick.Ā

Roy Williams, Wide Receiver, Dallas Cowboys

5 of 21

Williams has been pretty unproductive since he was traded to the Cowboys in the middle of the 2008 season.

Now that Tony Romo has soon-to-be-stud Dez Bryant, plus Miles Austin and Jason Witten, Williams is just the fourth receiving target for the Dallas Cowboys.

He could revive his career if given the opportunity with another team.Ā

Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback, Carolina Panthers

6 of 21

When the Panthers drafted Cam Newton with the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, it signaled the end of the Jimmy Clausen era in Carolina.Ā

However, he deserves another chance to start, despite a brutal 2010 season, and he should be traded during training camp.Ā

Chad Johnson, Wide Receiver, Cincinnati Bengals

7 of 21

Johnson, Ochocinco, whatever you call him, the point remains that he will likely be traded before 2011.

Quite simply, he has worn out his welcome in Cincinnati, and he deserves an opportunity to end his career with another team.Ā

Vince Young, Quarterback, Tennessee Titans

8 of 21

You can put VY on the list of NFL players who wore out their welcome with their team in 2010.

The 27-year old has never been a successful quarterback in this league, but he deserves an opportunity to start somewhere in the NFL.

It just won't be in Tennessee, and the drafting of Jake Locker guarantees that. Plus the Titans have said that they plan to move on from Young, even though head coach Jeff Fisher was fired. Ā

James Harrison, Linebacker, Pittsburgh Steelers

9 of 21

Harrison is one of the best defensive players in the NFL.

He's also a complete head case, and he made things a lot worse this offseason with his comments to commissioner Roger Goodell.

When he insulted quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, he may have worn out his welcome in Pittsburgh.

There are a lot of teams who would love to acquire Harrison. Ā

Chris Johnson, Running Back, Tennessee Titans

10 of 21

If Chris Johnson was traded, it would be because the Titans are rebuilding and the NFL's most explosive running back doesn't need to spend his career playing for such a poor team.

Johnson would likely receive two first-round picks, or more, if he were traded. But it could definitely happen.Ā

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Cornerback, Arizona Cardinals

11 of 21

When the Cardinals drafted Patrick Peterson with the fifth overall pick in the 2011 draft, they may have done it not just because he was a great player but because they were planning to trade cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to this team for this player.Ā

Carson Palmer, Quarterback, Cincinnati Bengals

12 of 21

The Cincinnati Bengals are completely in the rebuilding mode for the 2011 season. Wide receivers Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson will likely be with a different team next year.

And quarterback Carson Palmer has basically talked his way out of Cincinnati. In fact, he has even gone as far as to say that he will retire from professional football if he isn't traded.

He will likely be traded for a draft pick in the second round.Ā

Kyle Orton, Quarterback, Denver Broncos

13 of 21

Orton, 28, is not the quarterback of the future for the Denver Broncos. Tim Tebow will be given every opportunity to succeed under new head coach John Fox.

Orton could be traded to a team like the 49ers, where he will be a starter. He is at least an average starting quarterback in the National Football League, and has 4,000-yard potential in 2011.

Larry Fitzgerald, Wide Receiver, Arizona Cardinals

14 of 21

Fitzgerald's contract ends after 2011, but he may not even be on the team this season.

He has publicly stated his desire to have Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb traded to Arizona, and when the best player on the team makes such a request, it's wise to try to honor his wishes.

There's no way that Fitzgerald is going to want to catch passes from Derek Anderson, Max Hall or John Skelton in 2011.Ā

Nick Barnett, Linebacker, Green Bay Packers

15 of 21

Nick Barnett's injury in 2010 opened the door for Desmond Bishop to succeed. Bishop played well enough to earn a four-year contract extension.

As a result, a guy like Barnett, who is now a backup, should be traded during training camp this year.Ā

Reggie Bush, Running Back, New Orleans Saints

16 of 21

The former Heisman Trophy just isn't the answer in New Orleans. He missed time due to injuries and carried just 36 times in 2010.

The emergence of Chris Ivory has likely closed the door for Bush's future in New Orleans. There's also Pierre Thomas, Julius Jones and Ladell Betts still on the roster.Ā

Marion Barber, Running Back, Dallas Cowboys

17 of 21

Marion Barber suffered through a disappointing season in 2010, carrying just 113 times for 374 yards (3.3 yards per carry). He is no longer the feature back in Dallas.

Felix Jones and Tashard Choice have taken over the running back duties in Dallas. Barber, 27, could still start somewhere in the NFL. Ā Ā

Lee Evans, Wide Receiver, Buffalo Bills

18 of 21

Evans just turned 30 this offseason and because Buffalo will not be a contender in 2011, it makes sense for the team to try to trade Evans for a draft pick.

Another reason why Evans could be traded is the recent development of young wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who emerged last season as a playmaker.Ā

Michael Jenkins, Wide Receiver, Atlanta Falcons

19 of 21

The Atlanta Falcons drafted wide receiver Julio Jones with their first-round draft pick. They also have Roddy White, one of the top wide receivers in the NFL.

As a result, it would make sense to trade a player like Michael Jenkins, whose reception total last year was his lowest since 2006.Ā

Matt Hasselbeck, Quarterback, Seattle Seahawks

20 of 21

Even though Hasselbeck led the Seahawks into the postseason last year, a 7-9 record is really not that impressive. At all.

Plus it was Charlie Whitehurst who led the Seahawks to a victory in the season finale against the Rams. Hasselbeck might have a year left in his career. Maybe two.Ā

Donnie Avery, Wide Receiver, St. Louis Rams

21 of 21

Avery missed the entire 2010 season with an injury and as a result, has not had the opportunity to play with new quarterback Sam Bradford.Ā

The Rams have a number of mediocre wide receivers. Avery could be traded because he is the only one who hasn't had the chance to play with Bradford.Ā
