Dallas Cowboys: Which Undrafted Free Agents the 'Boys Should Target Post-Lockout

Jason HenryJul 14, 2011

Now that we’ve had some time to digest the draft and survey the free agency needs of each team, a few of the players who went undrafted may still find themselves on an NFL roster once the lockout has ended.

Free agency is a little thin in some positions so teams may turn to younger, inexperienced players to fill needs instead of older players who may still need time to develop in a new system if signed.

The Cowboys are in the same position as their secondary and defensive front can still use an upgrade.

Here are five players Dallas should target once the lockout is over.

Deunta Williams, FS

1 of 5

Alan Ball is returning to Dallas but he’s going back to his original position of cornerback. Dallas may sign Michael Huff to add experience and depth but even if he’s signed Dallas will still need more help.

While former North Carolina product Deunta Williams is still very raw he would fit well as he’s decent in zone coverage and may do well with new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

He’s not the fastest but Williams usually plays pretty smart against receivers who have the potential to burn him deep.

Kendric Burney, CB

2 of 5

Another North Carolina guy Burney has great technique and loves to get physical, something Dallas is missing in the defensive backfield.

The knock on Burney is that he sometimes shies away from tackling and lacks the needed strength to keep up with NFL receivers.

But if Dallas is willing to spend a little time waiting for him to fully develop I believe the payoff on Burney would be tremendous.

Ian Williams, DT

3 of 5

Williams was already on the Cowboys radar as he had an interview with the ‘Boys during the combine.

If Dallas still has interest then Williams would probably slide into the nose tackle position as his weight is a healthy 319 pounds.

There have been rumors that Ryan may move current nose tackle Jay Ratliff to defensive end because he isn’t big enough to run the nose in Ryan’s defensive scheme.

Williams is a Notre Dame product and football I.Q. runs pretty high. Dallas should take the chance on a guy with Jay Ratliff potential.

Vance Cuff, CB

4 of 5

I believe that Dallas needs to address their issues at secondary due to their dismal numbers last season against the pass.

Jenkins, Ball, and Scandrick were beat often and were some of the most penalized players in the league.

Cuff is fast, running a 4.3 in the 40, and has great make-up speed as well.

If his technique improves and he’s able to remain disciplined instead of taking chances he’ll have a chance to grow into a pretty decent cornerback.Vince Cuff, CB

Jerrard Tarrant, S

5 of 5

Tarrant is an aggressive guy with a physical attitude. He has pretty good speed and can return punts as well.

If Tarrant fails to develop as a safety for the Cowboys he may still prove worthy as he has potential to be a good special teams guy by returning punts.

Tarrant seems like the type of guy who has more heart than talent and will turn into a pretty good NFL player.
