Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Will They Snub Doug Williams for Ring of Honor?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will announce a third member of their Ring of Honor Wednesday morning.

It should be Doug Williams.

Should be, but will it be?

Those of us who knew and covered Doug during his playing days here with the Bucs will be the first to tell you he is the next logical choice to join his coach, the late John McKay, and his Hall-of-Fame defensive end, Lee Roy Selmon.

It should be Doug. He's already in the Washington Redskins Ring of Fame.

He should be in Tampa Bay's.

It was Doug who played the key role in taking this team from worst to first, Doug guided them to the 1979 NFC Central title, Doug showed us incredible heart and leadership on the run to the NFC title game against the Rams.

The dumbest move in the history of the franchise was to let Williams walk away back in the Culverhouse ownership era over a piddling $100,000. It was pure justice when he led the Washington Redskins to victory in Super Bowl XXII over Denver and was named the game's MVP in the process.

It was Doug's finest hour.

The latest history between Williams and the Bucs ended poorly when he was basically shown the door from his front office job last year.

At best, Williams has to have bittersweet feelings about the Buccaneers and when you really think about it, it wouldn't be surprising to see yet another snub tomorrow if he's not the third guy going into the Ring of Honor.

If not Williams, it could be the late Ricky Bell, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards during that 1979 push to the division title.

But it should be Doug Williams.

One of Doug's favorite sayings when he talked to us in interviews was: "No doubt about it...."

It should be Doug Williams.
