New Orleans Saints: 4 Undrafted Free Agents the Saints Must Target

Will OsgoodJul 11, 2011

It appears the NFL lockout will soon come to an end. Free agency will have an oddly quick pace to it as camps will be underway shortly. But another aspect of the offseason will also get its play; college free agents will be signed.

Teams have had plenty of opportunities to put together a list of players they want to make a run at. Now they can only hope they can finish the deal on a number of these prospects. Of course the prospects themselves have had an unusual amount of time to evaluate the destinations they consider to be the best fit for them.

College free agency is an area of player acquisition the Saints have had some tremendous success in, in prior years under Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton. They hope the added time this offseason will only help them nail it even more. Here are a group of players the Saints must target in college free agency.

QB Pat Devlin, Delaware

Since Greg McElroy was drafted by the Jets, the next best option as a Drew Brees-type QB to groom for the future is Devlin. I loved the kid coming out of Delaware and was shocked that he was not drafted.

This is no indictment on Chase Daniel, but I strongly believe in bringing in a rookie QB every year if possible, if for no other reason than hoping to develop them to one day trade them for a draft pick.

Such a technique has helped numerous franchises over the last few seasons acquire assets they would have had no other way to acquire. It is smart business. And I believe Devlin is capable of one day pulling a third-round pick, if not better, in exchange for his services.

S DeAndre McDaniel, Clemson

McDaniel is another kid I was shocked to see go undrafted. Most draft services had him rated as a third-round prospect just prior to the draft. I would assume McDaniel is one of the top five college free agents remaining on every team's board.

Given the Saints overall lack of depth at the safety position, and the lack of assurance of re-signing Roman Harper, McDaniel could be a steal if the Saints can acquire his talents. In my opinion, the kid has Pro Bowl-type talent.

DT Corbin Bryant

I could not even find Bryant on the NFL-draft-player page on NFL.com, which leads me to believe he was not drafted.

As a DT at Northwestern, Bryant was very underrated and a player who always stood out when I watched Northwestern the last few years (I'm a big fan of Coach Fitzgerald). Bryant isn't the most talented, nor the guy who seems like he hasn't gotten a lot out of his talent.

Instead, he is a hard working and smart player, who will overachieve for you. He is the kind of guy you can count on to bring it every snap. And he would be an excellent fit in black and gold.

DB Kendrick Burney, North Carolina

4 of 4

Sadly, I don't think that's actually Burney. The guy is so small and so hard to track down. That could be an advantage for the team that drafts him. As a hybrid defensive back, Burney has the skills to play both corner and safety. With his small stature, QBs may never see him so he can come out of nowhere to record some interceptions, and maybe Darren Sharper their [well you know what I want to say].

Burney made some huge plays at Carolina, especially as a junior, and likely would have been selected had he played a full season as a senior. Regardless, Burney promises to be one of those guys who makes a difference for whichever team signs him in a few weeks.
