NFL Free Agency: 8 Best Red-Zone Receivers Available
Heading into this season's free agency, there aren't a lot of free agent wide receivers.
The biggest name, ironically, is a player who just came out of prison a few months ago. As for the rest of the bunch, well, there really aren't that many big names available.
The following slides highlight the eight best red-zone targets among free agent wide receivers this season.
8. TJ Houshmandzadeh
1 of 8Housh stands 6'1" but has just 10 total touchdowns in the past three seasons, after recording 12 in the 2007 season.
Housh could very well be onto his fourth team in four seasons next year (Cincinnati in 2008, Seattle in 2009, Baltimore in 2010).
7. Steve Smith
2 of 8Smith should be out in 2011 to prove that his 2009 season (107 catches for 1,220 yards) wasn't a fluke.
He struggled to remain healthy in 2010 and could be with a new team in 2011. The 6'0" wide receiver has just 11 touchdowns in his career.
6. Santonio Holmes
3 of 8Holmes isn't a big touchdown target (just 26 scores in five seasons). And he stands just 5'10".
But he is the recipient of one of the most famous touchdowns in the history of the National Football League, a six-yard diving grab in the back of the end zone to win Super Bowl XLIII.
He is one of the top red-zone targets in the league.
5. Randy Moss
4 of 8Count me among those who think that Randy Moss will revive his career.
His 2010 season ranks as one of the worst by a wide receiver in recent memory. He caught just 28 passes for 393 yards and five touchdowns last year.
The 6'4" wide receiver will have a new team next season, and I think he'll experience success. It won't be like with the Patriots in 2007 or the Vikings in 1998, but I wouldn't be surprised to see 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns.
4. Sidney Rice
5 of 8Rice stands 6'4" and weighs 200 pounds, which should make him a viable red-zone target.
But he has just 18 touchdowns in his career and should be out in 2011 to rebound from a very disappointing, injury-plagued 2010 season.
3. Terrell Owens
6 of 8Owens may be 37 years old, but he really isn't slowing down as much as people think. He came within 27 yards and a touchdown of a 1,000-yard, 10-touchdown season last year.
He is 6'3", big, strong and will be a top option for any team in the red zone.
2. Braylon Edwards
7 of 8Edwards has enjoyed just one huge season so far in his career (2007), when he caught 16 touchdowns.
He hasn't topped 1,000 yards in any of the past three seasons, and it's going to be interesting to see what type of a contract the 28-year-old gets.
However, the 6'3" wide receiver remains a very viable red-zone target.
1. Plaxico Burress
8 of 8Burress is the top red-zone target among free agent wide receivers next season despite not having played since the middle of the 2008 season.
He stands 6'5", weighs 226 pounds and would be any team's top receiving target close to the goal line. He has 26 touchdowns in his last 40 games and should be good for six to seven touchdowns in 2011.
