Derek Jeter Gets 3,000th Hit: The 10 Most Memorable Home Runs of Jeter's Career

In the third inning of Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Derek Jeter became one of two players to hit a home run on his 3,000th hit. Wade Boggs is the other.

He's the 28th player to reach the elusive 3,000 hit club.

Jeter's the fourth youngest player to reach 3,000 hits. The three ahead of him...Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron and Robin Yount.

10. The Lone Grand Slam

In 253 career at-bats with the bases loaded, Derek Jeter has just one grand slam. The grand salami came in a June 18, 2005 interleague confrontation against the Chicago Cubs.

The Yankees won the game 8-1.

9. The Inside-the-Parkers

Derek Jeter has two inside-the-park home runs in his career, both came against the Kansas City Royals.

His first happened on Aug. 2, 1996. The game entered extra innings scoreless. Cecil Fielder put the Yankees on the board in the top of the 10th to give them a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the inning and Joe Girardi on second, Jeter hit his sixth career home run inside the park style. It gave them a 3-0 lead.

In rare fashion, a then-young Mariano Rivera blew the save as the Royals scored four runs to win the game 4-3.

Jeter's second inside the park home run came 14 years later at age 36. New York trailed 3-1 in the third when Jeter laced one to center field. Royals center fielder David DeJesus tracked it down, but the ball popped out of his glove when he hit the wall.

Jeter raced his way around the bases to tie the score at three. The Yankees defeated Kansas City 10-4.

8. The All-Star Home Run

Heading into the 2001 All-Star Game, amazingly, no Yankee slugger went yard in the Midsummer Classic since Yogi Berra in 1959.

In the sixth inning at Safeco Field, Jeter hit a solo homer to make it 3-1 in favor of the American League. The AL went on to win 4-1.

It only took a year for the next Yankee to hit a dinger when Alfonso Soriano went deep in the fifth inning of the 2002 All-Star Game in Milwaukee.

7. The First Win at the New Yankee Stadium

The Yankees didn't get to showcase their new stadium until the 10th game of the season against the Cleveland Indians. It wasn't pretty as the Indians trounced the Yanks 10-2.

There was a bit more drama in the second game of the series. In the bottom of the eighth with the scored tied at five, Jeter stepped up against Jensen Lewis.

Jeter, who was 0-for-4 heading into the at-bat got himself into a hitter's count of 3-1. He got a fastball and deposited into the right field seats to give New York a 6-5 lead.

Rivera notched the save, and the Yankees picked up their first win at their new digs.

6. The First One

Derek Jeter made his Major League debut in 1995, but 1996 marked his first full season.

On opening day against the Cleveland Indians, there was a lot of hype surrounding the 22-year-old. In the top of the fifth off of Dennis Martinez, Jeter exemplified why he deserved the hype.

He lined a pitch out to deep left field for the first of his many home runs in Yankee pinstripes. His solo shot made the score 2-0, and the Yankees won 7-1.

Jeter went on to take the 1996 Rookie of the Year Award with a .314 batting average, 10 home runs, 78 RBI and 104 runs scored.

5. Subway Series Heroics

In Game Five of the 2000 World Series the Mets took a 2-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning.

Jeter stepped up with one out and went yard to tie it up at two off of Al Leiter.

Three innings later, Luis Sojo's dramatic two-out, two-run single gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead, and their third consecutive World Series Title.

4. The Lead-off Home Run

In Game Four of the 2000 World Series, Derek Jeter took the first offering from Bobby Jones and smacked it out for the 16th lead-off home run in World Series history.

The Yankees won the game 3-2 to take a 3-1 series lead.

Jeter won his only World Series MVP Award; he went 9-for-22 with two home runs, two RBI and six runs scored.

3. Mr. 3000

Out of the 28 hitters who reached the 3,000 hit plateau, none had a better day on the game they hit their 3000th than Jeter.

He went 5-for-5 on the day for just the second time in his career. His fifth hit, a single up the middle, gave the Yankees a 5-4 lead. Mariano Rivera preserved the win in the ninth with his 22nd save in his career.

2. The Home Run That Shouldn't Have Been

The Baltimore Orioles held a 4-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the eighth with Armando Benitez on the mound.

Derek Jeter stepped to the plate with the bases empty with one out. Benitez started off the at-bat with a high fastball on the outside part of the plate; Jeter went with the pitch and lined it out to right field.

Orioles right fielder Tony Tarasco went back to camp under the ball, but 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier lunged over to retrieve his prize.

After a heated discussion between Tarasco, Orioles manager Davey Johnson and the right field umpire the home run stood.

Bernie Williams won the game in the 11th with a walk-off homer off of Randy Myers.

Luckily for the Yankees there was no replay back then. What a way to hit the first postseason home run of your career.

1. Mr. November

The Arizona Diamondbacks were just an out away from putting the Yankees in a 3-1 series hole in the 2001 World Series.

They had a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth when Tino Martinez stepped up to the plate. Martinez, who'd been 0-for-9 heading into the at-bat launched a home run to center field off of Byung-Hyun Kim to tie the game at three.

In the bottom of the 10th, the clock struck midnight and marked the first World Series game to be played in November.

At 12:03 A.M., Jeter sliced a slider down the right field line just over the wall to give the Yankees a 4-3 walk-off win in the tenth.
